One o f th e m o st p r e ssin g problem s fa c in g so c ie ty as a w h ole is th e prob lem o f A m erican schools. T he im m en se tech n ological d evelop m en t o f th e la s t fe w d ec ades coupled w ith an aw ak en in g o f eth n ical a w a ren ess and th e r e su ltin g civil r ig h ts dem ands, h ave cau sed a v erita b le r e v o lu tion in A m erican sch ools. N o t on ly is th e curriculum b ein g a l m o st co n sta n tly re-evalu ated and revised, b u t th e v e r y p h ilosop h y u n d erlyin g ed u cation al con cepts in A m erica h as also been k e e n ly a ffe c te d . T he school c r isis is q u ite evid en t, even to th e p e o ple w ho are in no w a y con n ected w ith th e ed u cation al sy ste m . Indeed, m an y organized grou p s and ind ividu als are w ork in g to solve th a t v e r y crisis. W e in our U k rain ian p arochial school s y ste m fa c e th e sam e problem s as th e r e st o f A m erican s o ciety . W h eth er w e are aw are o f it or n ot, our sch ools are u n d ergoin g th e sam e revolu tion as o th ers. W ith th e en tire ed u ca tion al s y s te m w e sh are th e prob lem p rep arin g y o u n g ste r s fo r th e advanced tech n ological ch an ges th a t are ta k in g place a lm ost d aily. W ith oth er C atholic sch ools w e sh are th e problem o f sh o rta g e o f fu n d s and th e r e su ltin g lack o f s u ffic ie n t eq u ip m en t and q u alified personnel. Added to all th is is our own problem o f p r e se r v in g n ation al id e n tity in our p aroch ial sch ools. To do a proper job o f ed u cat in g y o u n g people in a m odern so ciety , sch ools m u st re ly on a s t a f f o f p ro fe ssio n a ls. Good will, u nsupported b y tech n ica l k n o w l edge, sim p ly w ill n ot s u ffic e . To obtain and keep a s t a f f o f e x p e rienced p ro fe ssio n a ls, sch ools should esta b lish a scale o f sa la ries com m en su rate w ith th a t o f oth er p ro fe ssio n s. On th e oth er hand, ev en th e b e st o f s t a f f s need ad eq uate eq u ip m ent to do its w ork p rop erly. A m odern school, even on th e elem en ta ry level can no lo n g er rely solely on a blackboard and a book. A ll t h is requ ires m on ey in q u a n tities w h ich our parochial school s y s te m h a s n ot even dared to ask fo r so far. T he fu n d s m u st o f n e c e s s ity com e from our U k rain ian com m u n ity. W ith it m u st com e all th e m oral su p ort w e can m u ster. A nd now le t us ask o u rselv es a d ilem m a fa c in g th e n ation and o f sa cr ific e is required o f us to keep our sep a ra te parochial school s y ste m — is th is s y ste m rea ly w orth m a in ta in in g ? T he an sw er w ill depend on th e role our sch ools w ill p lay in our com m u n ities. I f th ey con tin ue m e r e ly to prepare our children fo r h ig h er education th e n th e co m m u n ity w ill probably con tin ue w ith d ra w in g its su pp ort from our parochial sch ools as i t h as tend ed to do fo r th e la s t fe w years. T he trend is a v e r y n a tu r al one, i f one con siders th a t th is ser v ic e can be p erform ed by o th er school s y ste m s m ore w id ely based, and so, m ore econom ical. M any U k rain ian fa m ilie s fin d it sim p ly n ot w orth th eir w h ile to drive th e ir children considerable d ista n ces to atten d a U k rain ian p arochial school, i f th e sam e ed u cation can be obtained in th eir neighb orh ood school.
