BRANCH 98, HOLMDEL-MIDDLETOWN, N.J. UNWLA NEW JERSEY REGION COUNCIL Seated: Olga Boeckel, UNWLA President Anna Krawczuk, Orysia Jacus, UNWLA Vice-President Olga Trytyak, Dr. Margaret Putykewycz. Standing: New Jersey Regional Council President Maria Poianskyj, Valya Tikhonov (guest), Mary Bonanno, Victoria Mischenko, Haiyna Jakubowycz, Anna Poruchynsky, and UNWLA Scholarship Program Chair Luba Bilowchtchuk. Missing: Elisabeth Barna, Christina Bilowchtchuk, Taisa Jacus, Nadia Kot, Rita Oberleitner, Ann Pedersen, and Christine Roland. Last year, 1998, our Branch reached its first important milestone-ten years of being part of the UNWLA. In those ten years we can proudly say that we have accomplished much of what we set out to do. In the three years since the last convention we have gone about our work in the same manner in which we started. Those three years have seen our Branch continue to sponsor a student through the UNWLA Scholarship Program. We were also able to send her a parcel of clothes through the efforts of our members. In that time we have continued to put on library displays in our area, the last in 1997 that was the highlight for cultural Chair Anna Poruchynsky. The main library facility in Manalapan, NJ was the focal point of ‘Ukrainian media: Finding facts about historical and contemporary Ukraine’ that took up five display cases and brought many favorable comments from the general public. Our fundraising efforts brought forth some big projects for a Branch as small as ours. We co sponsored a dinner dance with the Ukrainian American Veterans of Post#30. That venture was so successful that we went on to co-sponsor a trip to Atlantic City again with Post#30. Of course we held the usual bake sales, garage sales, and sundry other events to raise money, but the most enjoyable has been the annual Christmas covered dish dinner held at a member’s home for the past three years. This event has proven to be the best attended. We have again collected clothes to send to Ukraine for the family we help support in the Chornobyi area as well as an orphanage that received toys along with the clothes. And most recently we have done our part in collecting funds for the flood victims in Zakarpattia, Ukraine. As we reflect on the ten years that have passed, we also look forward to the next ten years and to all that they will bring and we can only imagine what is in store for us in the next millennium. 283 www.unwla.org www.unwla.org
