UNWLA Regional Council of New York hosted a special event honoring Mrs. Dina Udovenko, wife of Henadiy Udovenko, the President of the 52nd United Nations General Assembly. The event was held at the Ukrainian Institute of America. Mrs. Ludmyla Kryzhanivsky, wife of the Consul General o? New York and Mrs. Iryna Yel’chenko wife of Permanent Representative to UN of Ukraine, H. E. Volodymyr Yel’chenko, accompanied Mrs. Udovenko to this program. As PR Chair, I arranged this program and was Mistress of Ceremonies. March 20, 1998 the NGO Committee on the Family invited me to speak about my trip to Washington DC to celebrate the International Women’s Day at the White House and on par ticipation in the “Vital Voices: Women in Democ racy” Conference in Vienna Austria. I was proud to announce that the UNWLA representative was one of 100 to be invited to the White House. We were also among the group of 75 partici pants 1o attended the Vienna Conference from the U. S. I also represented the UNWLA at the 40th anniversary of the Ukrainian Mission to the UN on March 27, 1998. At this reception I pre sented the Ambassador with Dr. Martha Bo- hachevsky Chomiak’s book, “White on White” . On May 14, 1998 the New York NGO Committee on the Family celebrated the Inter national Day of the Family in the Dag Ham- merskjold Auditorium at the United Nations. The event was titled “the Family in the Millennium: New Hopes New Image” . I suggested to the NGO Committee on the Family to invite the Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN speak at the celebration. I was honored that my suggestion was taken under consideration and Ukrainian Ambassador H. E. Mr. Volodymyr Yel’chenko addressed the audience. His excellent presenta tion was published in the September issue of “Our Life” magazine. Every September the United Nations De partment of Public Information holds Confer ences at the UN. During the reporting period I attended the following Conferences: 1. “The United Nations Facing the Challenges of a Changing World” , in 1996 2. “ Building Partnerships” , in 1997; and 3. “ Universal Declaration of Human Rights” in 1998 (The Ukrainian Ambassador addressed the audience at this conference which was attended by many members of the newly formed Branch 123 in New York). In addition, I had the honor of being in vited by Ukrainian Consul General Victor Kryz hanivsky to several receptions; the last one was his farewell party on September 15,1998. The Ukrainian Institute of America held a farewell reception for the President of the 52nd General Assembly H. E. Hennadiy Udovenko and his wife Dina. I was instrumental in inviting the President and his wife to the UIA, and was Mistress of Ceremony for this reception. United States Government The UNWLA President Anna Krawczuk and I were invited to attend the White House briefing on February 17, 1998, given by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton on her trip to Cen tral Asia, Russia, and Ukraine. The UNWLA President and I received an invitation to the White House Celebration of the International Women’s Day. Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Dr. Yuriy Shcherbak and his wife Maria attended this celebration which was held on Wednesday, March 11 1998. President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright and other members of the President’s Cabinet at tended the celebration. Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan and other members of the diplomatic corps were among the guests. An article on the celebration was published in the May issue of “Our Life” magazine. CELEBRATION OF UKRAINIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY Dr. Yuriy M. Shcherbak, Ukrainian Am bassador to the US invited leaders of Ukrainian American organizations to a meeting at his resi dence on June 10 1996 regarding the celebra tion of the Fifth Anniversary of Ukrainian Inde pendence. Present at the meeting was Dr. Yuriy I. Kostenko, Minister for Environmental Protec tion and Nuclear Safety of Ukraine. As part of the program, Ambassador Shcherbak and Min ister Kostenko briefed us on present economic situation in Ukraine. The second part of the meeting was dedicated to celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of Ukrainian Independence here in the US. In New York, the Celebration of the Fifth Anniversary of Ukrainian Independence was held on August 22, 1996 at the Waldorf Astoria. The celebration was sponsored by the Ukrainian Mission to the UN, the Ukrainian Consulate, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and 128 www.unwla.org www.unwla.org
