OXANA FARION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBER AND LIAISON FOR MEMBERS-AT-LARGE At the UNWLA Convention in 1996, I was elected UNWLA Executive Committee member-at-large. Soon after, I was given the task to be liaison for the Members-at-Large, an assignment I accepted with enthusiasm. My predecessor, Ms. Sophia Hewryk, gave me the membership list, which had the names and ad dresses of 86 members-at-large. I soon realized many things about Ukrainian-American women in today’s America. For personal, professional, family or other rea sons, they have moved from the geographic areas, where large Ukrainian communities tradi tionally exist. Our members-at-large live in all corners of the USA, from Alaska to Florida and Puerto Rico, and from California to New Eng land. The only way that they can be members of the UNWLA, is to be a member-at-large. Who are these women? Our daughters, sisters, aunts and cousins. Many with college degrees, influential and creative women with the skills, talents and desire to maintain contact with, and somehow work within the Ukrainian community. Among our members-at-large are scientists, physicians, attorneys, pharmacists, writers, businesswomen and pianists. It is our fortune to count among our members Chief of staff to First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, a fi nancial planner and UNWLA consultant, the art ist whose work you see on this cover, as well as the cover from our previous convention book. My mandate was to find these women and encourage them to become UNWLA mem bers. All members-at-large received correspon dence about our activities and projects, specifi cally the Program of our Social Welfare Com mittee and its humanitarian work with orphana ges and female pensioners in Ukraine. Our drive seeking sponsors for UNWLA Scholarship Pro gram for needy students in Ukraine, information regarding the WFUWO and its Congress in To ronto in 1997, about the devastating floods in Transcarpathian Ukraine and our clothing and fund drive to assist the people there, as well as our heartfelt greeting to them with the Christmas and New Year season. Many of the members-at-large respon ded. Some with questions, some with obser vations about the work carried out by the UN WLA, some expressing their needs from our organization and requesting more information about us and the work done by the UNWLA. Their responses convinced me that the potential for growth in membership and participation in UNWLA activities by these women could not be ignored. They donated money, they sponsored student scholarships, they headed projects in their locales. We must thank them for all that they have done, and now we must provide them not only with an opportunity to be included in the Ukrainian American women’s community, but to provide them with an avenue where they can express themselves and use their talents. At the conclusion of my term, we now have 140 members-at-large, an increase of 65%! In my experience, correspondence alone does not effectively encourage a strong re sponse. Personal contact and recruitment is a more effective method to find women in remote locations, determine their needs, and see how our organization can meet those needs. This seeking out potential members-at-large should be the responsibility of each UNWLA member. As a member of the UNWLA Mem bership Committee, chaired by the 2nd vice- president Sophia Hewryk, I attended two confer ences in 1997, one in New York, NY and an other in Buffalo, NY. I also was a delegate of the UNWLA in Toronto at the WFUWO Congress. I was actively involved in the successful planning and execution of the Pre-Convention Member ship Conference held November, 1998 in Phila delphia, PA. In conclusion, I thank all the members of the Executive Committee, and I especially thank all the members-at-large, who are so dear to me for their cooperation and fruitful collabora tion over the last three years. 138 www.unwla.org www.unwla.org
