OLGA TRYTYAK MEMBER OF THE UNWLA EDUCATION COMMITTEE In January of 1997, the UNWLA an nounced its second International youth contest, titled “Nature and Us.” The contest was organ ized by the Education and Ecology committees of the UNWLA. The Ecology committee was added to the UNWLA during the XXIV Conven tion in Philadelphia. Olga Trytyak, vice president of UNWLA, was the administrator of the contest. Dr. Dennis and Mrs. Myroslava Stachiw were active committee members. The contest was announced in the Di aspora, in the press in Ukraine, and in children’s magazines. The contest aimed at encouraging young people to think about the planet’s eco logical situation. They were asked to describe ecological problems in their environment and to think about how they could resolve those prob lems on an individual basis. For purposes of the contest, entries were divided according to par ticipants’ ages. Children, age 7-16, were divided into three groups. The youngest of these par ticipants were encouraged to submit drawings on this topic. Parochial schools, Ukrainian Saturday schools, Youth organizations, and member or ganizations of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations were encouraged to participate. Women’s organizations in Ukraine were also invited to take part in the contest. Participants were notified that qualifying works would be published in a contest book, appropriately titled “Nature and Us,” and that every participant would receive a copy of the book along with a certificate of participation. The response to the context was over whelming. The following list contains the num ber of young people involved based on their re spective countries of origin. The language in which they wrote their entries is included. The following is a list of entries, broken down according to what language they were written in and where they came from: From the USA, we received 280 essays written in Ukrain ian and 80 written in English. From Ukraine, we received 331 essays. From England and Brazil, we received 27 essays each; from Canada, 13 essays; from Slovakia and Yugoslavia, 2 essays each. The youngest contestants sent drawings, for a total of 290 drawings. Most of the entries we received came from participating schools and institutions, including 14 schools from the USA, 20 schools and 5 ecological clubs from Ukraine, 1 school each from Canada and Brazil, and from SUM in England. 2 artists, 1 writer and 18 teachers were invited to judge all entries. Cash prizes were distributed in the fol lowing manner: USA received a total of 52 prizes; Ukraine -- 51; Special Education Schools -- 78; all other participants - 19. Total cash prizes valued at $3,105. The book “Nature and Us” was pub lished in September of 1998. In the book we included excerpts of exemplary works, including color and black and white drawings. We also acknowledged the much appreciated service and commitment of the judges, and all commit tee members who helped in the publication of this book. Following is a list of financial con tributors and their donations: Ukrainian Federal Credit Unions > $2350 UNWLA Regional Councils & Branches > $1780 Individual Donations > $350 The book includes names and addresses of all contest participants. US children described at length the re cycling programs they felt were crucial for pre serving natural resources. Many also argued that unless we curb our dependency on automo biles, we will further pollute our most precious natural resource, the air. Children from Ukraine reflected on their renewed commitment to be come better caretakers of their own land. In June, cash prizes and “certificates of participation” were forwarded to a UNWLA rep resentative to be distributed to all Diaspora par ticipants. In October of 1998, the book “ Nature of Us” was distributed to all participants. In September and October of 1998, Olga Trytyak, Administrator of the contest, visited Ukraine and distributed first hand most of the prizes and cer tificates.
