Committee (the “ IHC” ) that works under the auspices of NCW/USA, I attend monthly Execu tive Meetings. I represented the UNWLA at the Semi-Annual Board of Directors Meeting on May 7th 1998 and at the “Women of Conscience Program” . On December 3, 1996, at the NCW Ex ecutive Meeting I announced that the UNWLA President Anna Krawczuk and I would be part of NCWs delegation to the ICW Triennial Conven tion in Ottawa, Canada that would be held in July 1997. Mary Tomorug, member of the NCW/US Executive Committee, was also part of the delegation. International Hospitality Committee Every Wednesday, 9 months a year, the Committee hosts programs for the wives of the diplomatic corps. During this term, our guests included Ms. L. Kryzhanivsky, wife of the Consul General of Ukraine in New York Victor Kryz hanivsky, and L. Zlenko the wife of the Perma nent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, Ana toly Zlenko. Presently Iryna Yel’chenko, the wife of the new Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, Volodymyr Yel’chenko, is attending some of our weekly programs. Each year I sponsor a program in the Ukrainian com munity. In 1997 the IHC and its guests were in vited to the Ukrainian Consulate to learn about Ukrainian Christmas traditions. Carolers from St. George Ukrainian Catholic School introduced the guests to special music associated with this joyous celebration. On May 27th, 1998, the International Hospitality Committee was invited to mark a double celebration at the Ukrainian Institute of America, the celebration of its 50th birthday and the 100 anniversary of the 100 year old land mark French Renaissance-style chateau. Walter Nazarewicz, President of the U.I.A. welcomed the guests and told the story of the splendid Ukrainian heritage and traditions as they have been remembered and transposed in America. A musicale featured gifted Ukrainian artist Lesia Hrabova soprano, and Volodymyr Wynnycky pianist. INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN From June 15th to 22nd, the Interna tional Council of Women met in plenary session, in Ottawa, Canada. Over 300 delegates from 39 countries attended the Conference. Elected to lead the I.C.W. as President for the 1997-2001 triennial period, was Mrs. Pnina Herzog of Israel. It was the first time that the women from Ukraine were observers at the Conference. The UNWLA sponsored Oksana Kuts and the National Coun cil of Canada sponsored Maria Drach. Ms. Drach’s attendance was made possible by an endowment fund left by former National Council President, Mrs. Hnatyshyn, a widow of the late Canadian Senator John Hnatyshyn and mother of Ray Hnatyshyn, a former Governor General of Canada. The Canadian National Council of Women proposed a recommendation to help the Children of Chornobyl. As the NCW/US delegate I seconded this recommendation. I was also instrumental in getting the observer from Ukraine Dr. L. Porochniak-Hanowska to speak on the state of health of children, women and the elderly in Ukraine. Articles about the ICW Conference which I authored appeared in: “The Ukrainian Weekly” on July 27, 1997. “The Ukrainian Women in the World” , English edition, in 1997 and “Our Life” in the October 1997 issue.
