LUBA BILOWCHTCHUK UNWLA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Education plays a vital role in the de velopment of a human being. To be given an opportunity to obtain an education is a great privilege that many individuals in the world community do not have. Education is the cor nerstone for success, opening doors and creat ing many opportunities that had previously re mained closed. Recognizing the importance of educa tion, UNWLA established a Scholarship Program in 1967. Its primary aim was to financially assist needy and orphaned students in South America and Europe. The UNWLA INC. Scholarship Pro gram has enabled thousands of orphans, aban doned children, and children from large families to attain an education. No longer were they doomed to a fate that was dictated to them by their financial standing or their social position. Through the generosity of UNWLA sponsors and benefactors in the last 30 years, thousands of students have benefited from the opportunities afforded them by education. Young men be came Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Ortho dox priests, boys and girls became doctors, dentists, engineers, and lawyers. Some young women became nuns and catechists and many became educators, secretaries, and bookkeep ers which qualified them for better paying jobs. Education empowered these young men and women to become participating and useful members of their society. With our financial and moral assistance, students in South America and Europe were given the opportunity to de velop their unique human potentials as individu als for the benefit of themselves and of society. From humble beginnings, the program became one of the largest and most successful student sponsorship programs within the Ukrainian community in the United States. Now 30 years later, the rapid growth and success of our program is attributed to all our generous sponsors and benefactors, not just from the USA but also from Canada and Australia. The UN WLA Scholarship Program has been expanded to include students not only from Brazil, Argen tina, Paraguay, and Poland but also from Croa tia, Yugoslavia, Bosnia, Romania, and Ukraine. The tremendous success of our program is also attributed to the UNWLA Scholarship Program Committee members whose devotion, idealism, self-sacrifice and understanding of the need for such a program has made it a reality. Orysia Jacus, Treasurer since 1988, responsible for the financial accounts of the program; Maria Polanskyj, Odarka Polan- skyj-Stockert and Maria Pazuniak secure spon sors and raise funds for the program; Anna Krawczuk, financial consultant, responsible for the investment of our endowment funds which total approximately half a million dollars. The administrator of our UNWLA INC. Scholarship Office, Victoria Mischenko, member of Branch 98, is responsible for all the clerical work in the office. The extraordinary success of our pro gram, resulting in the expansion of the scholar ship program, created a need for a larger office. In August 1997, a UNWLA INC Scholarship of fice was opened in Matawan, New Jersey. SOUTH AMERICA (BRAZIL, ARGENTINA, PARAGUAY) UNWLA has aided students in South America since 1967 when it was ascertained after a visit from Nadia Schulhan, (Director of the Institute of Catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Colegio Santa Olga), that our assis tance was crucial. It was in 1967 that the first stipend was sent to the Colegio Santa Olga with UNWLA Branch 33 of Parma, Ohio, as the first 158 www.unwla.org www.unwla.org
