December 3,1997 the Chair was invited to a screening of a film on the Vienna Confer ence by the former US Ambassador to Austria, Swanee Hunt, Chair of Vital Voices Steering Committee, Director of the Women and Public Policy Program at^John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. After viewing the film we had a conversation on how this film should be shown in the U.S. On my recommen dation this film was shown at the UN during one of the Conferences. A Ukrainian woman that was inter viewed in the film was Natalia Petrova, Presi dent of “All Ukrainian Committee on Children’s Rights” . On February 25, 1998, I participated in “Vital Voices Working Group Meeting” at the Department of State in Washington, D. C. At this meeting I talked about the statement that was submitted to the Economic and Social Council for distribution at the 42nd session of the Com mission on the Status of Women at the UN on Trafficking in Women. United Nations I am one of the representatives from UNWLA to the UN for the following NGOs; 1. the ICW, 2. the MMM; and 3. the WFUWO. In my capacity as representative, I ac tively participate in the NGO (I) Committee on Family; (ii) the Commission on the Status of Women’s Task Force on Institutional Mecha nisms for the Advancement of Women; (iii) the Committee on Mental Health; and (iv) UNICEF. In addition, I participate in many UN related events. September 26 1996 I was invited by the Ukrainian Mission to the UN to hear H.E. Mr. Hennadiy Udovenko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine addresses the General Assembly. The following day I attended a reception at the Ukrainian Mission in honor of the Minister. One year later O. Stavnychy and I had the honor to greet the Minister at his swearing in ceremony as the in-coming President of the 52nd General Assembly of the UN. It was an historic moment for Ukrainians throughout the world. Mr. H. Udo venko was the first Ukrainian to hold such a prestigious position. January 23, 1997 I met with Suzanna Stanik, Ukraine’s Minister of Family and Youth, who came to attend the UNICEF Board Meeting. I proposed that the Ukrainian NGOs form an NGO UNICEF Committee in Ukraine. February 28, 1997 the Permanent Rep resentative from Ukraine to the UN, H. E. Mr. Anatoliy Zlenko, invited leaders of the Ukrainian American Community to a briefing on the 51st session on the General Assembly and the work that the Ukrainian representatives put into that session. It was an honor to be invited to this meeting. On June 23, 1997, I was privileged to be invited to a reception honoring the President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, at the Harvard Club. At the reception during the question and answer period I had the opportunity to ask the President about the homeless children on the streets of Ukrainian cities and what is being done to im prove this situation, given that Ukraine ratified the Convention on Children’s Rights. (In the Convention it states that every child has the right to receive special protection and assistance from the State when deprived of family environ ment and other necessities.) Th« President agreed that circumstances like those I men tioned do exist, but said that the Ukrainian Gov ernment is working very hard to improve this situation. On September 22, 1997, I had the honor once again to be invited by the Ukrainian Mission to UN to hear the Presidents of the United States, Bill Clinton and Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma address the UN 52nd General Assem bly. Both Presidents were called upon to speak by the President of the 52nd General Assembly, Hennadiy Udovenko. This was a most memora ble moment in the history of Ukraine. On January 12, 1998 a meeting ar ranged by O. Stavnychy took place among the NGO representatives to the UN and H. E. Mr. Volodymyr Yel’chenko, the new Ukrainian Am bassador to the UN. The рифове of the meeting was to inform the Ambassador about our work at the UN as NGOs, especially about the State ment on the Trafficking of Women. During the reporting period other mem bers of UNWLA, Helen Prociuk, Olha Stavnychy, Nadia Shmigel, Chrystia Nawrocky, Dora Rak, Slava Rubel and I that represent WFUWO, World Movement of Mothers and International Council of Women met with the following repre sentatives and ministers from Ukraine that at tended the UN meetings: Dr. E. Lubanova, and Valentyna Dovzhenko, Minister of Family and Youth. On March 8, 1998, the UNWLA and the 127 www.unwla.org www.unwla.org
