positive. We drove to Ivano-Frankivsk to meet with Lubomyra Hovenko, President of the Ivano- Frankivsk Branch. An unexpected surprise was the arrival of Oleksandra Popeliuk, President of the Chernivetz Branch. We had another fruitful meeting with both Presidents and discussed the scholarship program in detail. While in Ivano- Frankivsk we visited the Catechetical- Pedagogical Institute where we were greeted by Sister Theodosia Lukiw who was definitely not a stranger to us. In fact, she was the principal of St. George’s School in New York City at the same time that I was a student. Sister Theodo sia recommends students from the Institute for scholarships. The young ladies in the Institute study Christian ethics with the goal of teaching this subject in schools in Ukraine. The first graduates from Ukraine were these idealistic young women from this Institute. Thanks to our many generous sponsors, we had 102 gradu ates in 1996! UNWLA Scholarship recipients. Temopil region. By far the most remarkable journey we had in Ukraine was our four-hour car trip through the Carpathian mountains to meet with Dr. Ok sana Hanych, President of the Uzhorod Branch of Soyuz Ukrainok. The Carpathian mountains are beautiful, surpassing any written descrip tions of them. We had an opportunity to meet with the members of the Zakarpattia region and to discuss matters that related directly to them. We also met with Father Roman Mir- chuk in Rudno, just outside of Lviv and visited the seminary where he is the assistant rector. Father Mirchuk recommends seminarians for scholarships. We traveled to Kyiv via overnight train, an incredible journey that everyone has to expe rience at least once! In Kyiv we were met at the train station by Atena Pashko, President of Soyuz Ukrainok in Ukraine. We met with all the other members of the Kyiv Branch of Soyuz Ukrainok, Lilia Hryhorovych, deputat and Vice President of Soyuz Ukrainok in Ukraine, Zoya Milchenko, President of the Kyiv Branch and other members of the Kyiv Branch. The Scholar ship Committee of the Executive Board of Soyuz Ukrainok in Ukraine, under the direction of Tamara Velychko, coordinates and approves all applications for scholarships from all the regions of Ukraine. All of the Branch Presidents from each region of Ukraine are members of this Scholarship Committee. In addition to accepting recommenda tions from Soyuz Ukrainok in Ukraine, UNWLA INC. also works with Tamara Melnyk (Interna tional Women’s Organization), Irena Kravchuk (Lviv) and others who deal with education. Our trip to Ukraine reaffirmed our com mitment to helping Ukrainian pupils/students in Ukraine achieve an education. From 1996-98 the UNWLA INC. Scholarship Program awarded 1,109 scholarships to pupils/students in Ukraine in the amount of $96,964.00. EVA STASHKIV FUND Eva Stashkiv was a member of UNWLA INC. Branch 17 in Miami, Florida who died June 1, 1977. In her will she left UNWLA money for the UNWLA Scholarship Program, and Branch 17 set up a Scholarship Fund in memory of Eva Stashkiv. The administrator of this fund is the UNWLA INC Scholarship Program, and the UNWLA Executive Board approves the recipient of the stipend. From the interest of the Eva Stashkiv fund, scholarships are awarded to UNWLA INC members only. In the last three years the following benefited from this program: Okasana Biskup (Br. 3), Martha Chomiak (Br. 78), and Lidia Stefanowska (Member at Large). Branch 17 also receives $500.00 each year, and $100.00 each year to take care of Eva Stash- kiv's gravesite. UKRAINIAN FREE UNIVERSITY (MUNICH, GERMANY) Thanks to the generosity of our spon sors and the recommendation of Dr. Alexandra Tkach, stipends were awarded to students studying in the Ukrainian Free University in Mu nich, Germany. The pedagogical courses are designed to raise the qualifications for teachers of the Ukrainian language. From 1996-98, scholarship recipients were from Poland, Kazak 162 www.unwla.org www.unwla.org
