the Ukrainian American Coordinating Council. On September 18, 1996, there was a celebration of Ukrainian Independence in the United States Congress. The UNWLA President and I participated at this celebration. The key note speaker was Vyolodymyr Horbulin, National Security Advisor of Ukraine. In 1998 a celebration of Ukrainian Inde pendence was held at the UN. The President of the 52nd General Assembly, Hennadiy Udo- venko, invited diplomats and leaders of the Ukrainian American Community to this celebra tion. I had the honor of representing the UNWLA at this event. OTHER REPRESENTATIONS. On October 7, 1996, New York Univer sity held a Conference on the implementation of the Platform of Action of the 4th UN World Con ference on Women in Beijing. On October 16, 1996, I represented the UNWLA at an UCCA Congressional Banquet. On November 13, 1996, I attended a Frontrunner Reception sponsored by Sara Lee Corporation. The theme of the reception was “A Decade of Achievement, A vision for the 21st Century. Award recipients were Madeleine Al bright, U. S. Representative to the United Na tions, and Coretta Scott King. On January 12, 1997,1 had the honor of representing the UNWLA at a reception in Stam ford, CT, honoring of Bishop Vasyl Losten on his name day. July 5, 1997, I participated in “ National Working Women’s Summit” at New York Uni versity. The topic was the implementation of the Plan of Action of the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing. This Conference was spon sored by the Labor Department and was tele vised nationwide. On November 22, 1997, Bishop Losten invited me to an opening of a new building that contains the library and an information center in Stamford. At the reception I greeted the gather ing on behalf of the UNWLA. I presented the library with the 1993 and 1996 UNWLA Conven tions Books and Dr. Martha Bohachevsky- Chomiak’s book “White on White” . On July 11, 1998 I had an invitation to an award ceremony hosted by Mayor R. Guiliani for volunteers that provide assistance to new immigrants. This program was televised on NY1. I also was delegated by the UNWLA President to participate in negotiations in uniting the Ukrainian American Organizations under one umbrella. We started the work in 1996; the last meeting was in mid 1998. There were many meetings and many different proposals were suggested on forming coalitions to unite all Ukrainian American organizations. Unfortu nately, after many hours of work, the UCCA and UACC could not agree on any of the proposed solutions and the negotiations ceased for the time being. THE LIFE CYCLE. The saddest moment in the life of the UNWLA is parting with the pillars of the organi zation. On January 12, 1998, in New York there was a wake for our beloved former President and Honorary President Maria Sawchak. Mem bers of the UNWLA National Board laid flowers at her casket. The next day the funeral was held at St. Andrew Cemetery, followed by a memorial gathering. At the memorial gathering I had an opportunity to share with friends her work during the Centennial Celebration of National Council of Women/USA in Washington DC in 1998. There were other great losses: Dr. Teodozia Sawyckyj on May 9, 1998 and Iryna Czajkowsky on December 6, 1998. And on January 26, 1999, we bid farewell to Lidia Burachynska, Honorary President of the UNWLA, a very unique individual, and a very special woman. They are irreplaceable. Coming to the end of my report, I would like to thank H. E. Mr. Anatoli Zlenko, former Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, H. E. Mr. Wolodymyr Yel’chenko, present Per manent Representative of Ukraine to the UN. Mr. Victor Kryzhanivsky the past Consul General of Ukraine in New York and the new Consul General of Ukraine in New York, Mr. Yuriy Bo- haievsky, for all the help that they have given me personally in my work at the UN and the UNWLA.
