Director and Inspector of the Ukrainian Lan guage Studies in both states. Magdalena was sponsored by UNWLA Branch 1 through high school. She later earned two degrees in peda gogy with a scholarship from Dr. Anna Samofal. She was also, awarded a scholarship-in-part from the Prof. Vasyl Chaplenko Memorial Fund for her Ukrainian Language Teachers in Brazil. Every year these teachers take courses in the methodology of teaching the Ukrainian lan guage. Brazil is the only country in the Diaspora where the Ukrainian language is a required subject in public schools in grades 5-12 in the states of Parana and Santa Catarina. From 1996-1998 the UNWLA INC Scholarship Program awarded 662 stipends in the amount of $169,365.00 in South America. Our financial assistance not only helps them financially but also morally. Just the awareness that Ukrainians in America, Canada and Austra lia care about the children and youth of South America gives them the encouragement and strength to study in order to be prepared for to morrow’s emerging world community. Many of the students in Brazil study in the evenings as they are forced, by the constant economic crises in Brazil, to work. In 1998. Brazilian currency again devalued. In 1995 the Ukrainian community in Brazil celebrated its 100 years of settlement in Brazil. We need to continue helping the next generation of Ukrainians in Brazil to maintain an awareness of their heritage in order to continue preserving the Ukrainian language, culture, tra ditions, and religion. The UNWLA INC Scholar ship Program is happy to provide them with the opportunity to become productive members of their community EUROPE - POLAND, YUGOSLAVIA, ITALY, ROMANIA & OTHER COUNTRIES In Poland, scholarships were awarded to Ukrainian students in Bilyj Bir and Lignica from the early 70’s, during the communist re gime and discrimination of Ukrainian people in Poland. The granting of scholarships had to be done with great secrecy and care for the main objective was to assist parents and students financially in keeping young people in Ukrainian boarding schools. It was only in 1989 that we were able to do so openly. It is with pride that we may proclaim that the leadership of Ukrainian communities in Poland consists of numerous able professionals, many of whom are former UNWLA scholarship alumni. They include My Myroslaw Sycz, Ph.D. (from Poland). roslav Sycz (sponsored by Luba Artymyshyn Br. 64), who published his doctoral dissertation “ Spoldzielczosc ukrainska w Galicji w okresie II wojny swiatowej” in 1997; Bohdan Huk , “ 1947” published in 1998, Fr. Bohdan Prach, author of “ Slava vo Vyshnykh Bohu” published in 1996. These works are evidence of the success of our scholarship recipients and the scholarship pro gram is very proud to have been instrumental in helping them achieve their success. The Ukrainian seminaries in Italy are filled with seminarians from Ukraine and the former Yugo slavia. Because of the war in Bosnia, Serbia, and the former Yugoslavia, many of our scholar ship recipients from those countries are sepa rated from their families and are living in Croatia, Italy, and Ukraine. They are faced with extreme hardships and our financial and moral support is essential at this crucial time. We are very grate ful to sponsors who continue to help them in the most difficult time of their lives. We continue our program in Romania. Ukrainians living in Romania are rebuilding their lives after many years of communist terror. Most Ukrainians live in poverty in remote villages in the mountainous regions of Romania. Our scholarships help families to survive. In the last few years, it has become evident that Ukrainians in Romania are experiencing the rebirth of Ukrainian culture and religion. Children are learning the Ukrainian language and they com municate with their sponsors and with us in Ukrainian. Our support in Romania is not only financial but also moral for it affords them an opportunity to come into contact with other Ukrainians in the Diaspora. Some scholarship recipients from Ukraine are studying in countries of Europe such as Germany, Croatia, Czechia, and Poland. They are extremely talented and very successful in their studies. 160 www.unwla.org www.unwla.org
