JAROSLAWA RUBEL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBER PRESS CHAIR This Committee has two major func tions. One is to keep our members informed of the various activities of Branches and Regional Councils; the other is to provide that information to the broader Ukrainian and American commu nities. To fulfill these functions the Chair works closely with Branch and Regional Council press secretaries of the UNWLA. To encourage that cooperation, early in my tenure I prepared a cir cular which detailed the scope of activities of the press secretaries and provided instructions on how to perform these tasks. I prepared a similar set of informative materials towards the end of my tenure as part of the work on preparing the memorial Convention book. Most of UNWLA Branches have press secretaries, but there are twenty-four branches that do not. Each month, the individual Regional Council or Branch press secretaries prepare a list of activities of their constituencies. If there is no press secretary, or an inactive one, the President of the branch provides that informa tion. Alternatively, the person who organized the activity may be the one writing about it. UNWLA Branches and Regional Coun cils often publish articles in the Ukrainian- American press about their activities and pro grams of the UNWLA. That is very important, both to let the broader community know what we are about and to garner support for our initia tives. Unfortunately, in recent years these op portunities have often been missed. In 1996- 1997 forty-eight such articles were published, but between 1997 and 1998 they numbered only fifteen. As part of my campaign to let the broader community know about activities of the UNWLA, I have published a fair number of arti cles about the programs of the UNWLA. Articles published in Svoboda focused on our support of needy children in Ukraine and on UNWLA’s XXIV Convention. I wrote reports to Our Life on the meetings of the Executive Committee, on the 7th Congress of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations, its history, and about UNWLA participation in that organi zation. Additionally, I participated in press workshops that were held on November 9, 1996 in Buffalo and participated in New York. I also attended in the work of the 7th World Congress of Ukrainians which was held in Toronto on De cember 2 through 7, 1998. At the 7th Congress of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations, held on October 21 through 27, 1997, also in Toronto, I chaired the Resolution Committee and took part in the Conference of the Social Welfare Committee held in New York on January 24, 1998. I also participated in the meeting with Vaientyna Dovzhenko, the Minister for Family and Youth in Ukraine, which took place in New York on February 5, 1998. I used the occasion of a private trip to Ukraine to visit, on behalf of the UNWLA, the Dzherelo Chil dren’s Health Center, on August 12, 1997, and the Truskavets Sanatorium the following day. UNWLA’s Social Welfare Committee funded fresh air program and provided medical care for twenty children each of these establishment. Last but not at all least, I was responsi ble for the preparation and publication of the Convention Book for UNWLA’s XXV Conven tion. I carried on the necessary preliminary cor respondence with the Regional Councils and Branches on this matter. That meant establish ing the format for reporting, preparing and coor dinating reports from the branches and the re gions, deciding on the format of the paid adver tisements, and some fund-raising activity. I enjoyed my work, and thank our mem bers for their support. 135 www.unwla.org www.unwla.org
