The UNWLA Detroit Regional Council President and the Regional Public Relations Chair wrote to their Congressional Representa tives about this tragic situation of trafficking in women from Ukraine and Eastern Europe for prostitution in theJJnited States. In her letter to the elected officials the PR Chair asked that the US government give the Ukrainian women a legal right to work for two years, just as it gives this right to women from Western Europe. This situation can change only when the economic conditions in Ukraine and Eastern Europe im proves. The Detroit Regional Council President and Public Relations Chair are to be congratu lated on this matter. The UNWLA will follow in their footsteps. The Detroit women were also helpful in sending out a New York Times article on this topic translated into Ukrainian, to news papers in Ukraine. The PR Chair from the UNWLA Ohio Regional Council, Nadia Dejchakivskyj received a fax from an unknown man. The faxed letter came to him from a woman in Italy that was trapped in an unusual circumstance and was asking for help. I gave the letter to Consul Bohdan Jaremenko at the Ukrainian Consulate in New York. He in turn faxed the letter to the Embassy of Ukraine in Rome, Italy (the Consu late division). The Consul investigated the situa tion. Unfortunately the woman that was seeking help was nowhere to be found but two other women were found and saved. The Consulate sent me a thank you letter. April 19, 1997, a Regional Conference was held in Philadelphia on the topics “ Ecology” and “ Public Relations” . Part of the session was open to the general public. At my invitation, two speakers addressed the audience: Dr. Christina Durbak and Dr. Sorosh Rochan. This was the first Conference to address the topic of “ Degra dation of the Environment and the effects on Women and Children” . The President of the Philadelphia Regional Council, Maria Rakowsky, is to be congratulated on a successful confer ence. At the invitation of UNWLA Branch 86 in New Jersey, Branch 113 in New York and twice by Branch 83 in New York I spoke on the fol lowing topics: (I) Trafficking in Women; (ii) The UNWLA/Public Relations; and (iii) the “Vital Voices: Women in Democracy” Conference (see report below). On November 14, 1998 the PR Chair of New York Regional Council Roma Kekish and Branch 123 jointly celebrated the 50th anniver sary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations. The two speakers were from the Ukrainian Mission to the UN Evhen Kuzij First Secretary and Oksana V. Boyko, Second Secretary. I had the privilege of joining this distinguished group as a speaker. Dr. Uliana Kekish moderated the program. REPRESENTATIONS, MEETINGS, CONFER ENCES AND CONVENTIONS. As UNWLA Vice President and PR Committee Chair, I have the privilege of repre senting the UNWLA, and being part of its dele gation on many occasions and to many organi zations. The organizations and events describe below are just a part of my activities in this ca pacity. World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations In 1996, 1997, and 1998 I participated in the WFUWO Annual Meetings in Toronto, Canada. At these meetings I reported on the work that the NGOs are doing at the UN in the Committee on Family, Mental Health and other related topics. AT the 7th Congress of WFUWO held October 22-26 1997 I moderated a panel on the work of NGOS in the UN. The following women were panelists; Helen Prociuk, Olga Stawnychy, the Ukrainian Minister on Family and Youth, Valentyna Dovzhenko, Zoa Nyzhankiwska and Christine Nawrocky. At this Congress Olga Stavnychy and I received a citation for our work at the UN. Furthermore, at the 7th Congress of Ukrainian World Congress I was one of the pan elists representing WFUWO. My topic was WFUWO’s and MMM” s work as NGOs at the UN. On 29 July 1998, I attended a Confer ence sponsored by the WFUWO and the De partment of Women’s Studies in Hunter College in New York City. The representatives from Ukraine that were sponsored by Project Har mony attended this session and several ad dressed the audience. As representative of the UNWLA, I also attended the reception at the Ukrainian Consulate for the Group from Ukraine and Banquet at the Ramada Inn in New Jersey at the end of the Project Harmony program.
