“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2020 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 7 What are the challenges associated with this work? The LOC is the largest library in the world. It has a very large staff as well. Many people catalog mate- rials related to Ukraine in various languages. Of- ten, people with little or no familiarity with Ukraine or things Ukrainian make cataloging deci- sions that actually impair access to a work. Or they misread the subject of a work . This situation re- quires my steady attention and alertness. Often - times it is up to me to add key elements to enhance the cataloging record. H ow did events of the past three decades (e.g., Chornobyl, Maidan, the Holodomor, the oc- cupation of Crimea and the war in Eastern Ukraine) affect your work if at all? They definitely have. When I began working as a subject cataloger in 1983, the Ukrainian c om mu- nity was marking the 50 th anniversary of the Ho- lodomor. At that time, the LOC had just a handful of publicat ions on this topic. Eventually, as it gained more attention, publications on various as- pects of the Holodomor demanded better subject access. T erms like “Ukraine — History — Famine, 1932 - 1933 , ” “Holodomor denial , ” “Holodomor de- nial literature , ” and “Holodomor Memorial (Washington, D.C.)” were introduced and officially approved for use. Speaking chronologically, the same can be said about “Chernobyl N uclear Acci- dent, Chornobyl ʹ , Ukraine, 1986,” “Millennium of Christianity in Kievan Rus, 988 - 1988,” “Ukraine — History — Orange Revolution, 2004,” “Ukraine — History — Euromaidan Protests, 2013 – 2014,” and “Ukraine Conflict, 2014 – ”, etc. With each new event in Ukraine, I have developed the appropriate access points in a timely way. Most recentl y, fol- lowing the lead of the US Board on Geographic Names, the LOC adopted “Kyiv” as the official name for Ukraine’s capital city. This has also in- creased my workload as thousands of records need to b e upgraded! Is there a way for the UNWLA to be helpful i n the work that you do at the LOC? Presently, the Museum regularly sends its high - quality exhibition catalogs to LOC. This is great. The Ukrainian Women’s League may consider es- tablishing a special en dowment for disseminat ing these catalogs among a select number of research libraries and museums in the United States. Each local branch of the League might set aside an an- nual amount to this fund or purchase a copy for a research library of their choice. Likewise, individ- uals may wish to contribute as a way t o support and increase awareness of the Museum’s vital work. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? When I am not working with books, I enjoy singing in the choir of the Ukrainian Catholic Natio nal Shrine in Washington. I also love learning some less er - known Ukrainian secular music as a mem - ber of “Spiv - Zhyttia,” an a capella group. I love working outdoors in my garden year - round, as weather permits. Maryland has a long growing sea- son. Is there anything else you would like to share? I am grateful f or this opportunity to share with readers some of the unique and often, not so ap- parent aspects of librarianship. As I approach re- tirement age, I am concerned about the growing need for specialists in Ukrainian studies. The fu- ture of organizations like the Ukrainian Heritage Consortium of North America depends on how many young people enter the library, museum and archival professions to continue our work when we retire.
