8 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “ НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2020 It is East er Sunday evening (April 12) as I prepare to write my monthly column. These past two months and this year’s celebration of the Re surrec- tion of Christ have been surreal for all of us. The COVID - 19 pandemic has changed the world’s landscape and our interac tions with everyone around us, inc luding our families and close friends. We’re being bombarded with information and statistics: how to protect our selves from this highly contagious and unpredictable illness and the often alarming results if we are not abl e to suc- ceed in distancing ourselv es from others. This environment has caused and con tin- ues to cause much psychological stress and anxi- ety. We read on Facebook and in printed materials suggestions for dealing with these stresses. Will the physical distan ce between us now result in our va luing our relationships more and our posses- sions less? Will the painful fate of so many stimu- late an appreciation for our own rich and full lives? Will we use this “alone” time to ponder our values, our respective paths in life? These abstract ques- tions ar e only a few which Dr. Oleh Romanchuk’s (Director of the Mental Health Institute at the Ukrainian Catholic Institute) article ( p. 9 in Ukrainian) titled “10 S trategies to H elp U s D eal with the C hallenges of T oday’s P an demic” touches upon. One take - hom e message from his article and other sources is that focusing on the future ra- ther than stressing about the current situation about which we can do very little will bear more fruit. Today’s technology has given many of us the possibility to work from home , to keep in con - tact with our families and friends, to hold virtual Easter breakfasts, to celebrate birthdays, etc. Among other things, this modern technology al- low ed the UNWLA National Board meeting to take place via We bEx on Saturday, April 4, 2020. Th is meeting of our Board members (23 attended) was not without challenge , but thanks to Nadia Nynka (UNWLA 3 rd VP) and Natalia Pawlenko (National officer at large) we were all able to con nect and to complete our agenda topi cs and discuss some pres - sing issu es, such as the recurring deficit of Our Life magazine, details of new Social Welfare project guide lines and other important issues, among them the date of our XXXII UNWLA Convention. After Vera Kushnir, UNWLA Finan cial Secretary and National Executive C onvention Liaison, met with the Philadelphia Regional Council Conven- tion Committee and spoke with the hotel originally selected as the site of the convention, it was de- cided that the Convention will be rescheduled for the first weekend of June 2021 (please see full an- noun cement on p. 3 ). UNWLA c onventions are events in the organ- ization's life, each convention serving as a venue where our members bond in camaraderie and hope for the future. Rescheduling the convention was a joint decision, one prompted by the understanding that everyone involved would need recovery time from the pandemic for this to happen. It was a dif- ficult decision to make, but like many decisions prompted by complex circum stances, it has yield - ed unex pected benefits. For one thing, the “down time” of social - distancing has afforded Dr. Marta Kichorowska Kebalo additional time to work on completing the long - awaited English - language history of the UNWLA. It has also given its current readers and advisors (Honora ry UNWLA Presi- dents Anna Krawchuk and Iryna Kurowyckyj, Honorary Members Maria Tomorug and Sofia Hewryk, and current UNWLA President Marianna Zajac) an opportunity to review the book page - by - page with its author. This book comprehensively documents the roa d the UNWLA has traveled since 1925, a journey with a rich and varied backdrop of events both in Ukraine and in the United States. Dr. Kebalo presents extensively researched facts, as well as interesting nuances, that will serve as an authoritative history of the UNWLA. For those of us who have been involved in this project, it has been an inspiring experience to get to know all the UNWLA presidents, each individual president’s unique talents and interests, and the projects each focused on because of these interests. This book will be a “must read” for anyone interested in learning about an organization that has earned a place of respect and influence in the diaspora. Stay tuned. _____________________________________________________________________ __________ Warm Wishes for Mother’s Day !
