OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women's League of America APRIL 1996 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO MOURNING BELLS by CAMILLA HUK We dedicate this issue to the victims o f C hornobyl (1986— 1996). In Bangladesh the mourning bell does ring, as terror-ential, raging waters bear away Mother, child, and brother. Clinging silk saris shroud their bodies, leaving only their disquieted faces exposed, and locking forever in their minds’ eyes, the sight of God’s blue sky and trees and leaves weaving endlessly. And sealed in their mouths, the names of all their gods and loved ones. The copper basins clang against the rocks in the water but the sound echoes upon emptied lands, rivaling the peal of the mourning bells. In the mountains of Iraq, a turbaned father scratches away the dried ground to place his last born’s shrouded body in its grave while the grieving mother wales her grief, across the dense waves of Kurds, And soon, echoes of other bereaved souls join her in a common squall. In Chornobyl, there is only silence in the parched land. An old babushka-d women sits motionless while her cow roams through the deserted village of thatched huts, in which now only the cemetary grows. Children’s voices ring from a distance, straining lethargic lungs, while their mothers measure time. In Rumania cages jam afficted, untouched, untended children, while the prettier, more healthy ones are inspected by friendly foreigners "for export”. God forgive me for doubting your wisdom or your love and help me to understand WHY. M ay 3, 1991. "НАШЕ Ж ИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 1996 19
