expands the space of the interior, the place.” In 1978 during an exhibit in Moscow sponsored by the union of architects, Ludmyla Meshkova is honored as a National Artist of Ukraine. The artist also created a cycle of portraits of con temporary artists. Excited by ceramic icons, she de clared: “... I want to create an entire iconostasis. An icon painted on ceramic not only produces beautiful half tones; it becomes permanent due to the nature of the material!” In 1980, Meshkova was honored in Tbilisi, the capi tal of Georgia, where the Artists’ Union sponsored her exhibit. Upon viewing his portrait, the Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church said: “The artist is inspired from above. May the Lord bless you. You have painted not my image, but your own soul. But I will try to live up to the image you see.” Perhaps the entire range of the artist’s wealth of expression is captured in her cycle “Ukrainian Flowers.” In its images and coloration, the work projects a strong sensitivity to those Ukrainian traditions that are near to the heart and true to the soul. Meshkova describes her work as an evolutionary process. She says, that as she undergoes changes on the personal level, so too her art reflects those changes, expressing a new slant or dimension of the eternal — earth, sky, water, fire. “These are constant, which is why the ceramic medium is so appropriate to depict them. Each is eternal.” The artist loves to use pure colors — red, white, black — and utilizes them in 30 abstract ceramic exhibits. In 1989 Ludmyla Meshkova visited New York as a representative in a world peace conference. As a guest at the Ukrainian Museum, she lectured about ceramic art and delighted the audience with a slide presentation of her work. But it is disturbing that an artist of the caliber of Ludmyla Meshkova, who has captured the hearts of many around the world, has not had her work exhibitied in a single exhibition in her native Ukraine, nor has any thing there been published about her art.
