XLVI NOVEMBER 1989 Editor: M arta Baczynsky ROSALIE POLCHE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN/USA ANNOUNCES ELECTION OF NEW OFFICERS Voted in by acclamation, the National Council of Women/USA announced the names of its newly elected officers and executive committee members. Claire Fried- land was elected President. She is currently a consultant to the book publishing industry and has had a career spanning several decades in the production end of the industry. Ms. Friedland is the recipient of the 1989 Women’s National Book Association Award, and has represented women’s interests in various organizations. Dr. Martha Bohachevsky Chomiak was elected First Vice President. She also serves as a Vice President of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America and is the author of “Feminists Despite Themselves: Women in Ukrainian Community Life 1884-1939.” Dr. Chomiak is a Professor of History at Manhattanville College, currently on loan to the National Endowment for the Humanities. Other distinguished women serving as Vice Pre sidents include Jacquelyn Knight Gates, Dr. Marcella Maxwell and Mary Sawicki Power. Anna-Lou Van Buren assumed the position of Secretary, and Carmen A. Cul peper is Treasurer. It is noted that Maria Savchak, President of the UNWLA, is a member of the NCW Board; representing the UNWLA Iryna Kurowyckyj, who was elected to the Executive Board, is a member of the Program Commit tee, as well as a member of the NCW International Hos pitality Committee. Merrinelle Sullivan, Honorary Presi dent of NCW, made it known that at the Board of Directors meeting in May 1989, Betti H. Salzman was elected President Laureate of NCW/USA. The title was conferred upon Ms. Salzman in recognition of her many years of work chairing the NCW International Hospital ity Committee. In the summer of 1988, the National Council of Women celebrated its 100th anniversary in a round of ceremonies in Washington, D.C. and New York, which included a reception hosted by the UNWLA at the National Press Building and was attended by hundreds of delegates of its affiliate, the International Council of Women. The NCW is the oldest non-sectarian women’s voluntary organization in America. It is instrumental not only in developing leadership for women in community and government affairs but as a charter member of the United Nations Non-Governmental Organizations, it also serves the cause of international communications and peace. The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America is a member organization of the National Council of Women/USA since 1952.
