The author, Miss Oya Borekci, Turkish Guide, Mrs. John Hnatyshyn, SUA Canadian Delegate, Miss Helen James, Journalist, Canadian delegate. ISTANBUL IMPRESSIONS (Excerpts f r om the Report of Our Delegate) August 25th. Visited the mosque of Suleyman, The Mag nificent, in the afternoon. W ith me were three United States de legates, and one from New Zea land. This was the m ost thrilling moment of my life so far. Here I not only had an opportunity to witness the prayer service in the mosque, but also to actually vis it the m ausoleum-graveyard Hurem Sultana Roxelane, wife of Suleyman is buried. I was deeply moved, when I finished reading the inscr i ption. Maybe I was the first of her countrywomen to visit her grave, in the long cen turies since her death? This was an opportunity for the other delegates, who were with me, to broaden their knowl edge of Ukraine. They all re m arked how grateful they were for this visit. * A ugust 25 at noon. There was a separate press interview by the United States Inform ation Service. I was the first to be called from our delegation into Carol Ann Buzdygan was Ukrain ian Queen at the International Women’s Exhibition in New York. the lobby of the Hotel Hilton. A Miss K uturm an from the T urk ish press asked questions. She said: “I know all about you. Were you born in U kraine?” A fter a few prelim inary ques tions she asked me to think w hat I m ight w ant to say. My rem arks were b rie f; I tried to keep them factual. I told them I was happy to be privileged to visit their beautiful c ity ; and doubly grate ful to the organization, U krain ian National Women’s League of America for sending me as a delegate. Besides th a t there are other historical facts which link the country of my origin with the Turkish people. I told the story of Roxelane, the daughter of an Ukrainian priest, not far from where I was born in W estern Ukraine, who came as a slave to Istanbul, and later m arried Suleyman, the M agnificent. She helped him to rule the Ottoman empire during the period from 1520-46 A.D. One of my missions was to vis it her tomb, when I was here. Secondly, to recall again th a t in the moment when U kraine won its independence, after World W ar I, the Turkish governm ent was one of the first to recognize the new Ukrainian state. A question followed as to my impression of the ICW Congress. I replied th a t women possess im mense power, and can be of great influence on the world problem, and peace. But, they m ust have courage, and strong faith in them selves; and a sure belief th a t a better world can be made. A. Volker SIDE LINES AND PERSONALITIES Aside from conferences, m eet ings, and the more serious as pects of the Congress, perhaps one of the m ost rew arding expe riences was m eeting and estab lishing friendships w ith the dele gates from all parts of the world. G etting to know them , and learn ing som ething of their back ground, problems, ideas, and in terests one became keenly aware th a t one’s life had been touched by a kindred soul from either near, or far corner of the earth. To cite a few of these experienc es, and have you m eet some of personalities on the pages of Our Life, shall be my endeavor. Pic tured above are some of the p a r ticipants in the Congress who greatly enriched my life, and about whom more will be said in the next issue. — A. У. НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — ЛИСТОПАД, 1960 19
