recognition of her outstanding work with Ukrainian American youth and her devotion to teaching them about Ukrainian theater and about the art of performing on stage, and for the forty years she has worked to bring Ukrainian theater to public attention in the United States, Canada and Ukraine. On Sunday, October 31, 1999, the presidents of the member organizations presented their annual reports. The reports of those presidents unable to attend were also read. The various committees presented their plans for the next year which were then discussed and approved. At the meeting, the proposal of the By-Laws Committee, recommending that WFUWO by-laws should be changed only every five years after approval at the WFUWO Congress, was approved. Resolutions proposed for the coming year by the Resolutions Committee were also approved; a copy of these will be mailed to all member organizations. President Oksana Sokolyk closed the Sunday session at 1:30 p.m., thanked everyone for their attendance and participation, and wished everyone a year full of great deeds and achievements, personal happiness and health. Representing the Ukrainian National Women's League of America at the annual meeting were UNWLA President Iiyna Kurowyckyj, First Vice President Maria Tomorug, Press Committee Chair Jaroslawa Rubel, Member-at-Large Irena Steckiw, and Editor-in-Chief of Our L ife , Irena Chaban. MEDICINE IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM by IHOR MAGUN, M.D. The new millennium has arrived and many of us wonder what to expect. We certainly have come a long way during the past hundred years and the next hundred years will bring even more changes. How will the new century be different, better than the last? And what is the future of medicine and health? Breakthroughs in antibiotics and other medications have saved many lives and continue to be used. Traditionally, researchers have devoted much of their time and effort to addressing the damage done by disease, but as the causative factors have become more clearly defined, increasing emphasis is being placed on the prevention of illnesses. Simply put, the focus of the future will be "preventive medicine". People can influence the quality and length of their own lives, particularly with assistance from medical professionals. Genetics play a major role, but research with genes and development of gene therapy will alter many diseases in the future. Through early screenings based on genetic information, proper treatment may be initiated in the very early stages of a disease. Behavior modification is a form of preventive medicine. It is well known that the most preventable cause of disease and death in the United States is the use of tobacco. Smoking has to stop. Alcohol intake should be moderate. Our diet has to be healthy. Physical exercise should be done on a regular basis. Stress needs to be handled. Research shows that some form of spirituality promotes wellness. Whether through formal religion or through personal reflection and reading, spirituality enhances a sense of connection to self, the universe and other people. It helps us cope with dark and difficult times in our lives. Cancer and infectious disease prevention is next on the list. Screening tests will become more sensitive and specific. Cancer chemoprevention using drugs and/or a combination of nutritional supplements will be recommended. Immunization of individuals at risk for prevention of viral and bacterial diseases will be the norm. New vaccines for developing viruses and bacteria will become available. Even new methods of medicinal administration will be available - in nasal sprays, patches and creams. While we contemplate how we should start the new year and new millennium and what resolutions we should make, we should remember staying healthy is a lifetime commitment. Wellness is a goal not only for healthy people, but a goal for everyone. In the coming months I will try to keep you informed of the latest developments in the medical field. Happy and healthy wishes! 16 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2000 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
