‘ESTABLISHED 1888 HONORED PRESIDENTS OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN MILDRED ROBBINS LEET 1964-1968 NANCY BARKER 1982-1984 ELEANOR DONNENFIELD 1985-1986 MARGARET ADAMS 1987 MERINELLE SULLIVAN 1987-1990 CLAIRE FRIEDLAND 1990-1991 ALICIA PAOLOZZI 1991-1993 IRYNA KUROWYCKYJ 1993-1995 VERA RIVERS 1995-1999 DR. SOROSH ROSHAN 1999-2001 was when she led the American delegation to the 27th International Council of Women Plenary Conference in June of 1994. It was the year France was commemorating the 50th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy by the Allied forces. On the excursion to Normandy's beaches, the guide spoke about how many American boys had lost their lives to save Europe from the Nazis. At that moment, Ms. Kurowyckyj continued, she realized that they had died not only to save Europe from the Nazis, but to save her and her family and many others like her. Fifty years later, almost to the day, she was president of the National Council of Women and was visiting the site where the battle of the century had taken place. There, on the beaches of Normandy, she had a chance to say a prayer for the young boys who had given their lives to save so many other lives. It was at this conference in 1994 Iryna Kurowyckyj had hoped to meet women from Ukraine coming to take their historical place as members of the International Council of Women. Unfortunately, political reality kept Ukrainian women from attending the plenary session in Paris in 1994. In 1999, while at the reception where NCW/USA presidents were being honored, Iryna Kurowyckyj was notified that at the Executive Meeting of the International Council of Women, held in Paris on October 22, 1999, the Ukrainian National Council was granted membership status in the ICW, a gratifying moment for all the Ukrainian women attending the event. Later in the program, the presidents of organizations affiliated with the NCW/USA were given honorable mention and Iryna Kurowyckyj, as newly elected president of the UNWLA, stood when the organization's name was read out. A journal, providing biographies of each of the ten NCW/USA presidents and describing their respective accomplishments as leaders of the organization, was published for the occasion. Errata. Page 18, paragraph 2 of the December issue of Our Life should read: On October 2, Stephania Baranowska, a member of UNWLA Branch 89 in Kerhonkson, represented the Executive Committee of the UNWLA at 50th anniversary celebration of the Ukrainian Youth Association in America. We regret the error. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2000 13
