NEWS FROM THE UNWLA SCHOLARSHIP/STUDENT PROGRAM BUREAU by LUBA BILOWCHTCHUK, Chair It is with great pride that we inform UNWLA members and readers of Our L ife about the achievements of UNWLA scholarship recipients and in this issue we extend heartfelt congratulations to our latest success story. We are happy to announce that Lidia Stefanowska has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Ms. Stefanowska's thesis, Between Vision and Constructions: The Poetics of Bohdan Ihor Antonych, has been accepted by the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures. A long time UNWLA scholarship recipient, Lidia was bom in Gorlice, Poland. After completing the Ukrainian Lyceum in Lignica, she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Ukrainian philology at Warsaw University. Lidia was accepted to Harvard University in 1992 where she was awarded a tuition fellowship towards her doctoral studies. Very generous UNWLA sponsors helped her with other expenses. Her UNWLA scholarships were made possible by the anonymous In Memory of Husband Fund (UNWLA Branch 86), Mrs. Melania Banach (UNWLA Branch 86) and Mrs. Olena Papiz (UNWLA Branch 81). We thank them for their support and congratulate UNWLA member Dr. Lidia Stefanowska on her success. From December 13, 1999 through January 14, 2000, Princeton University's Bernstein Gallery, located at Washington Road and Prospect Avenue in Princeton, New Jersey, is hosting an art exhibit featuring the work of Alexandra Isaievych. The gallery is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekends. An artists's reception has been scheduled for Sunday, January 9, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. and all are cordially invited to attend. A UNWLA member and former UNWLA scholarship recipient Alexandra Isaeivych was bom in Lviv, Ukraine and is a graduate of the Ivan Tmsh College of applied arts in Lviv. The UNWLA first became aware of Ms. Isaievych when she came to the United States to continue her art education at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, where she received her B.A. in 1992. She also holds a master's degree in economics and public policy from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University where she was a fellowship recipient. Ms. Isaievych's studies in Boston were sponsored by Mrs. Melania Banach (UNWLA Branch 86) and the Eva Stashkiv Fund (Branch 17), and during her stay in Boston, the artist created a logo for the UNWLA Scholarship Program. The logo, pictured above, has been used extensively on documents and correspondence issued by the Scholarship Program. Alexandra Isaievych is concerned about her homeland and has worked on several economic policy assistance programs in Ukraine. Her conviction that art provides inspiration for reclaiming the dignity of the human spirit and is as essential as good economic advice applies to all countries, including Ukraine, recovering from years of totalitarian devestation. As a beneficiary of the UNWLA Scholarship Program, Alexandra Isaievych is presently a sponsor herself and is helping a student in Ukraine achieve academic success with the help of the program. She resides with her husband in Summit, New Jersey. 14 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2000 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й .
