Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America Vol. LVII JANUARY 2000 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO НАРРУ Nm УЄ AM FROM THE DESK OF THE UNWLA PRESIDENT Dear Members of the UNWLA, readers of Our L ife , generous patrons and supporters of our work! I am pleased and honored to greet you with the new millennium — the year 2000. I wish for each of you a happy celebration and continued success in your many endeavors for the good of Ukraine and Ukrainians wherever they may be. The year 2000 is rich in celebration and in significance. The General Assembly of the United Nations has proclaimed that 2000 be designated as The International Year of Thanksgiving. And it is in this spirit that our organization has the opportunity to thank the Almighty for all the blessings he has bestowed upon us. We, Ukrainian women, have had not only the desire for personal gratification, but also common aspirations to lift the oppression from our suffering nation. Through prayer and vigilance we have witnessed the rebirth of an independent Ukraine. In the year 2000 we will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the UNWLA. The celebration will begin with a holy liturgy, thanking the Almighty for granting the founders of the UNWLA the wisdom and strength to create this organization and for directing our members in the good works that they have accomplished throughout the years. Our organization is unique because of the diversity of our membership — women of all ages and all persuasions. Common goals and activities smooth away differences; as members of the UNWLA we feel a sense of pride, a sense of belonging. Within the ranks of our organization, every woman grows individually and as a contributing and important member of a productive community. The UNWLA can be proud of its standing within the Ukrainian community which respects our achievements and our tireless efforts for the common good. Our programs and special events have earned the support of many individuals and for this too we can be thankful. The UNWLA has great responsibilities within this community, and the community has great expectations of the UNWLA. We must live up to these. In celebrating our 75th anniversary, let us turn our attention to the needs of our members. Let us also work to recruit a new generation of women into our ranks. They are our future. Let us also work to improve our organization by listening to one another. As Honorary President I. Rozankowsky has often emphasized, our meetings should include not only reports, but should be a forum for airing differences and difficulties which can be addressed and resolved. For many years, the UNWLA has financed various publications, the latest of which if "Milena Rudnytska: Essays, Letters and Documents" edited by the UNWLA's own Dr. Martha Bohachevsky- Chomiak. The Ukrainian Museum in New York remains “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2000 11
