WORLD FEDERATION OF UKRAINIAN WOMEN'S ORGANIZATIONS HOSTS ANNUAL MEETING IN TORONTO, CANADA by MARIA TOMORUG The annual meeting of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations (WFUWO) was held in Toronto, Canada, on October 30 and 31, 1999. The event was kicked off on October 29, 1999, by meetings of the By-Laws Committee and the Finance Committees from the U.S. and Canada. For consideration and approval -at the general meeting, the By-Laws Committee proposed that any future changes to the organization's by-laws should be made only every five years at the WFUWO Congress, not during the yearly meetings. It was further proposed that the committee would meet every year and consider any proposed changes submitted by various member organizations of WFUWO, all of which would then be voted upon at the Congress. The Finance Committees presented their annual reports and their plans for fund raising for the next year were accepted. After these meetings, a very interesting video from WFUWO's Eastern European Regional Conference, held in June of 1999, was shown by Mr. Sokolyk, the husband of WFUWO president Oksana Sokolyk. The official meeting, held on Saturday, October 30 and Sunday, October 31, 1999 was opened by President Oksana Sokolyk who welcomed all Board members, the presidents of various member organizations, and delegates from Canada, the United States, England, Poland and the Czech Republic. In her report, the President stated that during this centennial the world has probably seen more changes than ever before. Not only have we seen the biggest progress ever made in technology, tele-communications, medicine, human rights, man's travels through space, she stated, but also two world wars, many territorial wars, the beginnings of new nations, the beginning and collapse of the largest communist empire — the Soviet Union, and perhaps the biggest miracle of all, a free and independent Ukraine. We are, she continued, on the brink of entering a new millennium. What will it bring us -- just a new date on the calendar or will it bring us a brighter future? It will bring us a brighter future only if we all work together in unison with our brothers and sisters all over the world and in Ukraine, and only then will we be able to achieve our goals. She concluded her opening remarks by asking those present to enter the new millennium full of hope, optimism, love and understanding of one another, with readiness to help one another for a better world. The president then gave a detailed report about the very successful WFUWO Eastern European Regional Conference held in June 1999. After some discussion, it was agreed that regional conferences should be held every two or three years, each to be hosted by a different region. The president then reported on the status of Ukrainian Woman in the World (WFUWO's quarterly publication), on the WFUWO sponsored literary contest, on matters that were discussed at the World Congress of Ukrainians held in Toronto which she attended as president of WFUWO, and on the various changes now under consideration by the World Congress. President Sokolyk also reported on her attendance at various conventions of member organizations of WFUWO. She thanked the member organizations for their support and encouraged them to continue their hard work. President Sokolyk's presentation was followed by the annual reports of the members of the Board and the editor of Ukrainian Woman in the World. During the afternoon session, there were two workshops, one on the future of Ukrainian women's organizations in the new centennial and the other on the future of Ukrainian Woman in the World. The outcome of both workshops was a unanimous "yes" to the continuation of the publication and the organizations. The consensus was that Ukrainian women's organizations should continue their existence and should try to get new members by using all of the new media available. Special effort should be directed at recruiting younger women and new immigrants from Ukraine. The continued publication of the WFUWO quarterly was also affirmed and it was suggested that a campaign be launched to get as many new subscribers as possible. Later in the program, Dr. T. Bednazowa, the president of a newly formed Ukrainian women's organization in the Czech Republic, read excerpts from the biography she is writing on Sophia Rusowa (1856-1940). In the evening, there was a special theatrical performance by the members of Lidia Krushelnytska's Ukrainian Theatre Studio from New York City, a premiere of Lesia Ukrainka's Women Through the Ages. Following the performance, honorary membership in WFUWO was bestowed upon Lidia Krushelnytska, in НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2000 15
