in its modest quarters, construction on the new facilities impeded by unforeseen and escalating costs. As the UNWLA owns 51% of the museum's shares, we must share responsibility for its fate. The Internet has provided us with boundless opportunities. Information can be shared between individuals on opposite sides of the world in an instant. How we utilize this enormous potential is up to us. The UNWLA already has a web site: http://www/unwla.org. We invite you to log on and inform us about your events, programs, and activities. The year 2000 will also bring new elections in the United States and new political opportunities. It is an opportunity for us to elect senators and congressmen who will assist us in our goal of influencing the Department of State to change its policies towards women from Ukraine and other Eastern European nations, who seek to come to America for gainful employment. In closing, I would like to share with you some joyful news. On October 22, 1999, the International Council of Women welcomed the National Council of Women of Ukraine as a member organization. Our best wishes to them as they resume their historical place as fully vested and equal members in the international com munity of women. Iryna Kurowyckyj NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN OF THE USA HONORS ITS PRESIDENTS Honored Presidents of the National Council of Women. On October 27,1999, at a reception held in the United Nations Delegates Dining Room, the National Council of Women of the United States of America (NCW/USA) honored NCW/USA presidents and presidents of member organizations Approximately 270 guests attended the event, including distinguished members of the diplomatic com munity. UNWLA president Iryna Kurowyckyj, who served as NWC president from 1993 to 1995, was one of the ten honorees. Among Ms. Kurowyckyj's guests at the event were the Consul General of Ukraine, Yuriy Bohayevsky, and his lovely wife Olha; the president of the Ukrainian Insitute of America, Walter Nazarewich, and UIA board member Mary Pressy; president of the Ukrainian Museum, Olha Hnateyko; president of the Self Reliance Association of New York, Natalia Duma; UNWLA Vice President Mary Tomorug; UNWLA Press Secretary Slava Rubel; Nadia Shmigel, Chair of the UNWLA Social Welfare Committee; Olha Trytyak, Chair of the UNWLA Archives Committee; and last but not least, her husband, Jaroslaw. During the event, ten NWC presidents were honored and each president had the opportunity to name the most memorable moment of her administration. In her presentation, Iryna Kurowyckyj said, "I am Ukrainian by birth, American by choice. I was the first Ukrainian American president of NCW/USA in 107 years, the first Eastern European woman to hold this position."
