I WANNA R O ZA N K O W S K Y (Translated from Ukrainian) BEREHYNIA* OR SLAVE OF THE COMMUNIST SYSTEM? Львів, T аличанка", ч. З, 1990 Фото Й. Марухияка. An important historical process is occurring in the Soviet Union, resulting from the bankruptcy of commu nism. The captive nations are attempting to throw off Moscow’s yoke and achieve sovereignty. Although there have been tremendous positive changes, the communist system remains in power and continues to control all key aspects of life in the republics. Ukraine tries to take advantage of the existing options. In the representative government of Ukraine the elected deputies of the opposition are in constant conflict with the majority, new democratic parties are formed, youth is spurned to activism, and national rebirth has begun. Isolated from the western world for decades, Ukrainians have estab lished contact with the Ukrainian immigration and depend on it for moral and material support. Many activists from Ukraine come to America, where jointly with Ukrainian communities here they initiate and participate in projects of common concerns and interests. Unfortunately, to date not one woman has come to this country from Ukraine with the purpose of becoming acquainted with women’s organizations here, to establish contact and cooperation ties, although since the beginning of 1990 women’s groups have been in existence in Ukraine. In February the Ukrainian National Women’s League was formed in Lviv and shortly founded branches in other cities. In Kiev, a Women’s Assembly was formed as part of the RUKH movement. Little is known about the goals, agenda, structure and activities of these organizations. * Berehynia — a goddes and protectress of life, home and family in Ukrainian mythology. In Ukraine today the most exploited segment of the population are women and one wonders why that prob lem has not been brought to the public forum. The Ukrainian press frequently highlights the heavy physical labor required of women in agriculture and industry, but does not examine the reasons or consequences for this difficult situation, nor does it propose changes. The April 8, 1990 issue of The Ukrainian Weekly published an informative article by Solomiya Pavlychko entitled “The role of women in RUKH and in society in Ukraine in the 1990s.” Pavlychko is part of a group of scholars and writers — the founders of RUKH. She works in the Institute of Literature, the Ukrainian Aca demy of Arts and Sciences in Kiev, and her specialty is American and English literature. A women’s group “The Second Wreath” in Canada took advantagge of Pav- lychko’s visit to the University of Alberta and invited her to Toronto where she delivered a lecture about women in contemporary Ukraine. Subsequently the lecture was published. The author examines two questions — what is the attitude of society to the life circumstances of women and what are the problems of equality in the present political system. Basing herself on facts and statistical date, she has negative answers to both. The communist propaganda stated that the October revolution instituted the equality of rights for women. In actuality, the government enslaved women in the name of building communism. The work which women did and for which they were paid was considered part of an effort to sustain the community.
