TAMARA STADNYCHENKO BRANCH 90 OF UNWLA HOSTS LECTURE BY IRYNA KUROWYCKYJ ON INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE FAMILY On Saturday, September 24, 1994, Branch 90 of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America hosted a lecture on the International Year of the Family. The event was opened by Branch president Maria Rakowska who introduced featured speaker Iryna Kurowyckyj, president of the National Council of Women in the Uni ted States.and an active participant in activities spon sored by the International Council of Women. Founded in 1888, the National Council of Women holds NGO (non-governmental organization) status at the United Nations; its membership comprises women’s organization with a variety of ethnic, political, profes sional and philanthropic agendas and interests, includ ing the UNWLA, Professional Women in Construction and Allied Industries, the March of Dimes Births Defects Foundation, and American Women for International Understanding and a .host of other organizations estab lished by women for a variety of worthy purposes. The Council serves as a clearinghouse for information on issues of concern to women in America, provides a forum for discussion on these issues, and is active in promoting and facilitating projects and programs de signed to improve the status of women in the home, the workplace and in the community. As a founding member of the International Council of Women, the NCW also works to improve the lives of women around the world, by networking and cooperative activities with women’s organizations from other countries. As current president of the NCW, Iryna Kurowyckyj is an energetic anomaly who combines her responsibili ties of representing American women in the national arena with secondary and tertiary agendas — promoting the needs and interests of Ukrainian American women and those of women from Ukraine who for numerous reasons have not joined forces with women’s organiza tions on the international scene. Ms. Kurowyckyj began her lecture with a brief his tory of the United Nations sponsored International Year of the Family, a concept that was formally proclaimed and instituted by U.N. resolution in December 1989 with the idea of promoting the family unit as “the smallest democracy at the heart of society”. According to Ms. Ku rowyckyj, this concept met with some resistance from women who viewed the U.N. resolution as a blacklash against the achievements of women in professional and political roles; others complained that the family, in many world cultures, was the world’s “smallest dictator ship”.
