OUR LIFE MONTHLY, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. XXXII NOVEMBER No. 10 Editor Marta Baczynsky NOVEMBER 1ST LEGACY. November 1, 1918 is recorded as a glorious day in the pages of our history. It came with a trem endous roar that filled the sky — a nation, with one m ighty shrug tos sed off its yoke of servitude and said — "I am free". What is our legacy of that day in November. Is it to celebrate the memory of this event with "academias", concerts and recitals? Hardly. Our legacy is a lesson for everyday day of our lives — that is to remember who we are. It should exhibit itself each day when we speak the Ukrainian language, worship in our churches, work in our organizations, adhere to our traditions. We are pri vileged in America to have the freedom to remember who we are. Let us not abuse that privilege by forgetting or neglecting to indulge in that precious freedom. Let us not abuse the mem ory of that unforgetable day in November in Lwiw, by confining it to a tw o hour after noon concert. LEAVES Wolodymyr Sosiura The loud winds hold the b oughs in thrall — Now here, now there their strife; The yellow leaves from the branches fall And bid farewell to life.... The wind strikes hard with hands of dearth; Throughout the walks it grieves; In her maternal breast the earth R eceives th o se tiny leaves. Destined not only to decay, They yet shall have their u se — For roots will draw up from the clay In spring their lusty juice. Their path of sorrow d o e s not lead At last to utter loss, For brave new foliage yet will feed Upon their potent dross. And that shall be their proud return Under the sky's blue vault. Thus life through death new life will earn And win in death's default. (Translated into English by C.H. A COLLECTION BECOMING A MUSEUM The folk art collection, proudly owned by Ukrainian National W omen's League of America, is titled by our members as "The Museum of Ukrainian Folk A rt" or as "The Museum of Ukrainian National W omen's League of Am erica". This is a psychological desire on the part of our organization to truly be the founders of a museum — a cultural and folk art institute to serve our com m unit ies and those interested in research of our cultural her itage. Yet the transition from a collection to a museum is difficult. Demands of time, sacrifice, patience and above all money, weigh heavy upon the project. In 1926 U.N.W.L.A. presented its first folk art ex hibit in New York. The exponents shown, were on loan from private individuals. Its success was an inspiration to our organization to begin a permanent collection. It was enhanced in 1932 by a substantial purchase of art objects in Lwiw, and exhibited at the W orld's Fair in Chicago and throughout the United States. It seemed that in 1967 the folk art collection, so carefully preserved by U.N.W.L.A., had found a per manent home. In grand opening ceremonies the ex ponents were put on public viewing at the Ukrainian Institute of America. This action also brought state aid for the exhibit. Had it lasted to this day, the moneys would be substantial. But 1971 delt a painful setback to the organization and its expanding plans for the collection. Due to cir cumstances beyond the control of U.N.W.L.A., the ex hibit was closed to the public. In 1973 the adm inistration of the Ukrainian Institute 22 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ, ЛИСТОПАД 1975 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й .
