N atalia K. Pope was elected U krainian A m erican Queen fo r 1962 a t th e annual “Em broidered B all” sponsored by th e New Y ork branches of th e Soyuz U krainok earlier th is year. She w as to have been presented to th e press and public a t th e N ational W om en’s E xposition w hich took place annually in N ovem ber. How ever, due to unforeseen circum stances, th e exposition has been discontinued. N atalia and th e o th er N ation ality Queens w ere honored guests a t th e annual “D inner of C ham pions” in October, w hich w as sponsored by th e People-to- People Sports C om m ittee a t th e H otel A sto r in New Y ork City. Dale R obertson, TV actor, in troduced th e N ationality Queens, w ith N atalia leading th e pro cession to th e dais. In N ovem ber, N atalia, as th e U krainian A m erican Queen, a t tended a T h eatre B enefit a t th e DeMille T h eatre in New Y ork City. In a pre-perform ance pro gram N atalia along w ith th e Queens re p resen tin g eleven o th er nationalities w as introduced to th e special audience by M iss H elen E. M cC arthy, Com muni ty R elations C hairm an of th e A m erican N ationalities C om m it tee. Colonel E dw ard P. F. E ag an,, P resid en t and C hairm an of th e P resid en t’s People-to-People Sports Com m ittee, Inc., describ ed th e duties of th is com m ittee as — to im prove world u nder stan d in g am ong A m ericans of d ifferen t ethnic backgrounds and th e people of other nations. Colonel E agan fu rth e r m en tioned th a t th e N ationality Queens would be invited to p a r ticipate as a H ospitality Com m ittee a t th e international sports activities sponsored by his com m ittee. N atalia Pope is th e d au g h ter of Olga Pope, m em ber of B ranch 4 of th e Soyuz U krainok, and M athew J. Pope, N ational Com m ander of th e U krainian A m er ican V eterans. She atten d s St. Jo h n ’s U niversity and is stu d y ing fo r a career in law and in tern atio n al relations. She enjoys and p articip ates in U krainian Folk dancing and has attended th e U krainian C ulture courses a t Soyuzivka. A t th e 1963 “Em broidered Ball” held on S aturday, F eb ru a ry 1, N atalia crowned th e 1963 U krainian A m erican queen who w as selected from am ong th e m any young ladies present.
