WHY AM I ALWAYS SO TIRED? by Ihor Magun, M.D. Today, in our fast paced world, we are all busy and never seem to have time for adequate rest. At times, we begin to question why we always seem tired. Is it because we have too much to handle or could it be something else? Many of us have heard of a condition referred to as chronic fatigue syndrome. This syndrome con sists of extreme fatigue that has no specific explana tion or source. It typically lasts more than six months and is not improved or resolved with adequate rest. Performance at work and daily, routine functions are impaired. Activities once found to be enjoyable and relaxing are now a major undertaking. Chronic fatigue syndrome can have a combi nation of associated symptoms which include head aches, muscular aches and pains, sleep disturbances, joint pains, sore throat, concentration and memory im pairment, tender lymph nodes (primarily in the neck and armpit areas), and severe weakness lasting as long as twenty-four hours after any increased activity. The causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are a matter of controversy within the medical community. It has been linked to viral, immunologic, neurologic, and even psychiatric disorders. The syndrome can be persistent, and no specific testing or clinical signs can be found to explain it. A comprehensive physical ex amination, however, is required to exclude any treat able causes. The examination should include detailed questions and blood tests which may rule out problems with the thyroid, the liver or serum chemistries. One comforting factor is that chronic fatigue syndrome is rare and occurs in roughly six out of one hundred thousand adults. Most cases of fatigue, in fact, are really life style related and can be ameliorated in a number of ways . Recommendations for increas ing energy level include adequate rest and appropriate sleeping habits. Studies have shown that maintaining regular sleeping habits, weekdays and weekends, helps fight fatigue. A healthy diet is also recommended. A diet that is balanced and includes many fruits and vegeta bles while limiting fat intake is optimal. This should be complemented by regular physical activity for thirty to forty minutes at least three times per week. Reducing stress level, limiting alcohol ingestion and stopping smoking are also critical factors in eliminat ing or minimizing fatigue. By now, all of these rec ommendations may seem redundant. They are not new to any of us and have been cited often as the best means to achieve a healthier life style. The problem remains that many of us don't really stick to this sim ple regimen. We have many daily tasks, but one of the best tasks we can add to our daily schedules is the task of physical self-improvement. Working diligently on this additional task will let you tap into a reserve of energy you never thought you had. The sooner you begin, the better. You may be surprised how quickly the new energetic you surfaces. 16 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2000 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
