Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America Vol. LVII OCTOBER 2000 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT In August of this year, UNWLA Scholarship Chair Luba Bilowchtchuk, Treasurer Orysia Jacus, and President Iryna Kurowyckyj traveled to Brazil to review the current status of the scholarship program and to determine whether continued UNWLA support for the program is warranted. What we discovered was that the program is a tremendous success both for scholarship recipients and their benefactors. One example of the program's success is the many scholar ships received by priests and catechists who have dedicated their lives to God, youth and the poor. Priests from the Ukrainian community in Brazil are now serving Ukrainian congregations in the United States, Canada and other parts of the world. In the United States, Brazilian catechists are teaching catechism classes to Ukrainian American children in Saturday school. Even Ukraine, in its quest for priests to serve the growing number of congregations which have no priests, has turned to Brazil for help. In accordance with the resolution of the Scholarship Chair which was accepted at the 25th Convention of the UNWLA, the second agenda for the trip to Brazil was to organize an association of ex-scholarship recipients who, thanks to UNWLA sponsors, were able to obtain an education. Today, many of these scholarship recipients have at tained a professional standing and are in a position to help others. Many of those we met with to discuss this responded very positively to our proposition, had very positive feelings about the proposed association, and indicated that they would be happy to become members. It was decided that the association should indeed be created and Olha Kurchahin agreed to be its first chair. In the months to come, the Scholarship Chair will notify us of the work of the association and about the scholarship program. The trip began with our arrival in Curitiba on Friday, July 29, 2000. We were met by Vladyka Jeremiah Fer- ence, bishop Aspundosa, the pastor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of South America and a UNWLA scholarship re cipient, father Edison Bojko, the general vicar and pastor of the cathedral of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, catechist Olha Kurchahin and catechist Ivanka Okamavska, a scholarship recipient sponsored by UNWLA Branch 67. For several days we stayed at the home of the catechists in Curitiba. Our tour leader was Olha Kurchahin and we were very grateful for her help. Our first evening in Curitiba we were invited to attend a service at the Roman Catholic church.
