Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LVII FEBRUARY 2000 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Dear UNWLA Regional and Branch Presidents, members, and friends of our endeavors: We have received letters from Ukraine with news that in some areas of the country children faint from hunger because parents don't have the money to pay for breakfast in school. In response to such news, the UNWLA is embarking on a new project -- milk and buns (bulochky) for school children in Ukraine. At this time, we have selected two schools, one in Kharkiv and on in Lviv, as a pilot project. We will start our worthy cause to help the smallest and the neediest in grades 1,2, and 3. Please remember that children are the future of a nation-- a glass of milk costs only three cents; a bun costs nine cents. Branches and Regional Councils may choose a class of their own to sponsor. Letters and receipts for food purchases should be sent to UNWLA Headquarters in New York. We will gladly share with you letters, photographs and other materials that we receive. The coordinator of the milk and buns program is Nadia Shmigel, chair of the UNWLA's Social Welfare Committee. Regional presidents have been informed about the new program and have approved it; the President of Soyuz Ukrainok in Ukraine, Atena Pashko, has promised local cooperation and has responded to our information about the program with great enthusiasm. Please look for support within the membership of the UNWLA and beyond, especially among non- Ukrainians. Thank you for your anticipated participation in this important project.
