The Press panel was organized by Christine Na- vrocky, UNWLA’s Press Chair. She was joined by Dr. Adrian Karatnycky who spoke about foreign press on Ukrainian soil, and Olha Rudensky who detailed the his tory of OUR LIFE magazine. A brief essay about Ukrain ian American women journalists in Ukraine written by Marta Kolomyets, who is presently on assignment in Ukraine, was also read. The Art and Museum panel was prepared by Art and Museum Chair Irene Russnak. Luba Firchuk as well as the chair of the Ukrainian Museum Building Fun draising Committee, Anna Alyskewycz, spoke about the Museum’s new building project and the need for funds. Rising to the occasion, several delegates offered dona tions and within minutes $9,000 was raised. Lubow Wol- ynetz, curator of the folk art collection at the Museum spoke about the importance of preserving traditional folk garments. The Scholarship panel was organized by Anna Krawczuk, Chair of the UNWLA Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program. Her guest list included scholar Nadia Kerecuk who spoke about the importance of propagating Ukrainian studies on the international arena and Olga Korczagin, who described the role Ukrainian boarding schools have played in Brazil in educating Ukrainian children. Both speakers are former UNWLA scholarship recipients. In 1992 UNWLA’s Scholarship Program celebrated twenty-five years of helping hun dreds of students in South America, Europe and the United States obtain educational opportunities. As part of the Saturday luncheon delegates had the opportunity to hear an address by the president of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, Atena Pashko. She spoke about her organization’s reactivization and growth, described the work in progress and the anticipated aims and goals. Later in the program delegates were treated to a children’s fashion show moderated by Oksana Korduba. Following the luncheon seventy-three branches received commendations for work well done. The certif icates of merit were presented on the basis of 100 per cent compliance with specific regulations of the organi zation or for a particular praiseworthy deed. The Convention’s elegant banquet was held on Sunday, May 31. Its guest list was headed by Bishop Basil Losten and included Ambassador Victor Batiuk, Ukraine’s Consul General in New York Victor Kryzha- nivsky and Dr. Zenoviy Kryvoruchko, commissioner of the Lviv Regional Ministry of Health, among others. Numerous distinguished representatives of various Ukra inian American organizations were also present. Five members of UNWLA were honored at the ban quet for outstanding achievements and service to the organization. Honorary memberships were conferred upon Dr. Mary Beck, Lidia Diachenko, Irene Lewycky, Anastasia Smerechynsky, Iryna Czaikowsky and the outgoing president Maria Savchak. The delegates at the Convention passed resolutions (OUR LIFE, July/August 1993) which will guide the organization in its work for the next several years. Much emphasis was placed on UNWLA’s relationship with Ukraine, particularly on the aid so desperately needed there. However, it was stressed that the aid must be cen tralized and directed to where it does the most good. Organizational problems were high on the agenda and membership recruitment was on the priority list. Also important was the strengthening of the organization’s infrastructure and the development and support of internal programs such as representation. During the Convention proceedings it was announ ced that Iryna Kurowyckyj, member-at-large on the National Board, was elected president of the National Council of Women of the United States. This is the first time that a Ukrainian woman has assumed this office of the more than 100-year old organization. A politically oriented panel, held on Friday, May 28, served as a pre-convention kick-off. Organized and chaired by Iryna Kurowyckyj, it featured three guest speakers: Viktor Batiuk, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations, David M. Hatcher, of the U.S. State Department and Robert McConnell of the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation. The convention is UNWLA’s most important institu tion. The By-Laws of the organization have given the convention the highest legislative powers. It also serves as a vehicle through which the voice of the consti tuency, represented by each delegate, can be heard in an open forum, commenting, debating and voting on the agenda and policies of the organization. Leaders are elected and honors and commendations are bestowed. The convention is most important to members of the organization. To those who attend the convention as delegates, it means a responsibility to represent the branch with dignity and wisdom. To non-delegates it is a chance to see their large organization in action — to witness its traditional ceremonies, hear interesting panel discussions, observe the elections and the transfer of power. But for everyone .— delegate, non-delegate and guest alike, the convention offers a wonderful opportun ity to be in touch with people, to see old friends and make new ones. Our organization is rich in members who hail from every part of this majestic land which the convention reduces to parameters of a single hotel. From the west and east coast, from the north and south, people came to the convention where they met and talked, laughed, remembered, exchanged photographs, and some tears were shed. “See you at the next convention,” was the favorite phrase at the closing of this great event. 16 ’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 1993 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
