MARTA BACZYNSKY UNWLA’s XXIIIrd CONVENTION — LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE Anna Krawczuk, The Presidium of the XXIII Convention. Seated ko, President of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, Newly elected fr. I. Chair, Maria Kondrat, Oksana Bryzhun Maria Navarynsky and Myroslava Tershakivec President of UNWLA. Sokolyk, President of the WFUWO, Atena Pash- —secretaries of the Convention. With the past a matter of record and the future laced with challenges and hopes, UNWLA’s XXIIIrd Con vention was called to order on May 28, 1993 to deal with the present — to elect new leadership, reaffirm the valid ity of its current program and set a course for the organ ization’s activities for the next term of office. 142 dele gates, representing 105 branches of UNWLA gathered at the Newark Airport Marriott Hotel in New Jersey, where for three days they concerned themselves with matters of their organization, which due to unprece dented historical events in Ukraine, encountered new duties and responsibilities. The hosts of the Convention were members of the New Jersey Regional Council. Luba Siryj-Robinson as president of the Convention Committee officiated at var ious formal occasions during the proceedings. The delegates elected Maria Kondrat to chair the three-day event, with Marta Terlecky and Barbara Ba- chynsky as vice-chairs and Maria Navarynsky and My roslava Tershakivec as secretaries. Oksana Bryzhun Sokolyk, president of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations, Atena Pashko, president of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of Ukraine and Maria Turchyn, who heads the organization in Ivano-Frankivske in Ukraine, were honored guests present during the entire Convention program. The opening ceremonies of the UNWLA Convention are a time-honored tradition. Most impressive and mov ing was the procession of the members of the National Board, followed by the presidents of regional councils and honorary presidents of UNWLA Lidia Burachynsky and Iwanna Rozankowsky. The “Tree of Life” was lit by Maria Savchak, the president of UNWLA, as well as by the presidents of the Regional Councils and a represen tative of branches-at-large. The National Board’s re cording secretary, Maria Tomorug, read the official prayer of the organization. American and Ukrainian national anthems and the anthem of UNWLA were sung. Maria Savchak, president of UNWLA addressed the Convention assembly. She spoke about UNWLA’s achievements during her last term of office. In her capacity as the representative of UNWLA, M. Savchak had numerous opportunities to attend official state events and ceremonies in Ukraine and in the United States in conjunction with Ukraine’s independence, the visit of President Leonid Kravchuk to the United States and the opening of Ukraine’s embassy in Washington, D.C. The major assignment of the delegates at the Con vention was to elect a new slate of officers to its National Board, which is the organization’s legislative body. Through its duties and powers the National Board carries out “all business in compliance with the resolu tions of the Convention for the need and interest of the organization.” (UNWLA By-Laws). Anna Krawczuk was elected president of UNWLA. She succeeded Maria Savchak, who held the office for the past six years. A. Krawczuk is a member of Branch 86 in New Jersey. A ’’Soyuzianka” for the past thirty years, she is well known to anyone who is familiar with UNWLA’s Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program, which she has very successfully managed since 1984. A wife, a mother, and a business woman, A. Krawczuk also has the experience of having served in the United States Women’s Army Corps. A complete list of newly elected members to the National Board appeared in the June 1993 issue of OUR LIFE. Panel presentations and discussions were an impor tant part of the Convention. Various topics of signifi cance and interest to the organization and its members were dealt with. These panels were prepared by mem bers and chairs of the National Board, with the support of invited guest speakers. 14 ’’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 1993 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
