OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America CHRISTMAS GREETINGS With the approaching Christmas Holidays, we offer sincere greetings to all members of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, to all its Branches, and Regional Councils. We also take this opportunity to send our best wishes to UNWLA’s Members at Large, Our Life subscribers and our many friends. Our thoughts go out to our brothers and sisters in Ukraine with whom we spiritually share a Christmas message, of love, peace and freedom for all. A Blessed Christmas to all, and a Joyous New Year! The National Executive Board Viewpoint UNWLA EMBODIES THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS by Anisa Handzia Sawyckyj Christmas is a time of giving, when people reflect on their blessings and share of themselves with others. For UNWLA members, the season of sharing is not one month, but all year ’round. UNWLA embodies the spirit of Christmas in its program. Helping and sharing with others is the essence of UNWLA, the reason for its existence. Whether it’s visiting an invalid in a nursing home, helping a needy child in a faraway land attend school, sharing knowledge about our culture with others, helping prisoners of conscience in captive Ukraine — all this we do not for personal glory or profit, but to help our fellow human beings. UNWLA is made up of Ukrainian women of various ages, backgrounds and interests. In UNWLA, each of them has found her niche. And each one contributes in her own unique way to our organization’s goals. Sometimes, in our local Branches, necessary tasks like baking a cake for a bazaar, selling tickets to a fund raising event, or writing a report of Branch activities may seem tedious and unimportant. But if we look carefully, we will see that each action by an UNWLA member, however large or small, is part of a vast network of 4,300 women giving to others of their time and effort, each according to her talent — all in the spirit of Christmas. Thus, each member’s contribution, given in a spirit of sharing, is precious and we must value it. As UNWLA members and as Christians, let us during this Christmas season reaffirm our commitment to the values of our organization, to our families, parishes, communities, to the larger society of which we are a part and to the world in which we live. Let the Christmas spirit of sharing stay in our hearts, and inspire all our actions, all year through. Christ is born. Let us rejoice. Welcome Anisia Handzia Sawyckyj, to our Editorial Staff It is a pleasure to welcome Anisia Handzia Sawyckyj to our editorial staff, with responsibility for the Our Life’s English language section. Her name and initials A.H.S. are not unfamiliar to our readers. For the last several years, she has worked behind the scenes at Our Life, contributing articles, translations and adaptations. Ms. Sawyckyj has had a long-standing interest in writing and Ukrainian community affairs. As a college student, she was co-founder and the first editor of NYC Student Hromada’s New Directions magazine. She has also been associated as an editor with The Ukrainian Weekly. Her academic background includes graduate studies at Columbia University in the field of Chinese language and history, and American ethnic history. Ms. Sawyckyj has worked ;n advertising research. Currently, she is Managing Editor of a New York-based trade publication, where she writes under her married name: Anisa S. Mycak.
