Our Award U krainian wom en’s organiza tions are scattered th ro u g h o u t th e free world. F ourteen of th em are united in th e W orld F edera tion of U krainian W om en’s O r ganizations (W FU W O ), and a t w ork in eleven countries and fo u r continents. Some of these w ere founded long ago by th e firs t settlers. M ost of th em w ere organized a fte r W orld W ar II, w hen th e g re a t m igration of peo ples was a t its peak. The degree of th e ir stre n g th and ability varies. Some are m i g h ty central organizations w ith thousands of m em bers, and m any B ranches. O thers are sm all groups w ithout any ram ifica tion. The tren d of th e U krain ian settlers w as n eith er even nor stable. T herefore th e ir com m u nities are of d ifferen t size. Y et all th ese wom en’s organi zations have one th in g in com m on. R egardless if th ey are old tim e settlers or new com ers, th ey a re strongly attach ed to th e ir old country U k ra in e ; and feel deeply concerned about its fate. A lthough th ey are already se t tled in a new country and com m itted to it fo r th e fu tu re , th ey try h ard to give a helping hand to th e ir enslaved hom eland. T his stro n g em otional feeling binds all U krainian women to g ether. R ealizing th is, th e F ed eration of U krainian W om en O r ganizations (W FUW O) decided to give an aw ard to those orga nizations, which, in th e cu rren t year, accom plished th e m ost im p o rta n t deed. W ithout specify ing th e kind or form it took, o th er th a n th a t it should be an achievem ent in th e h u m an itarian or cultural field, accom plished by a group of U krainian women in th e free world. The decision fo r 1961 w as not h ard to determ ine. The B oard of W FUW O tu rn ed a t once to th e erection of th e m onum ent to th e g re a t U krainian poetess, L esya U krainka as an achievem ent of th e utm ost im portance. The Re gional Council of th e U krainian N ational W om en’s League in Cleveland, Ohio, originated th e idea; and a special com m ittee was form ed to com plete th e pro je c t th ro u g h 6 years — 1955- 1961. Its seven m em bers w ere K atherine M ural, C hairm an, M rs. M ychaylyna Staw nycha, Secretary, M rs. P arask ev a Ba- ranska, T reasu rer, M rs. Eugenie Dubas, M rs. Y aroslava Danyle- vych, M rs. A nna H aw rylak, and M rs. Irene K ashubynska, m em bers, processed th e heavy task th ro u g h th e long years. Septem ber 22, 23, 1961 th e statu e, cre ated by th e U krainian sculptor M ichael C hereshniovsky w as un veiled, and placed in th e keeping of th e city of Cleveland, Ohio. The im portance of th is achieve m ent becomes clear on consider ing th e role of L esya U krainka in U krainian lite ratu re . The poetess created w orks of endur ing value. H er flam e-like words stren g th en ed th e sp irit of th e U krainian people, and helped to shape an en tire generation. The m erit of th e Cleveland UNW LA Regional Council is even g re ater th ro u g h th e fa ct th a t it is her firs t m onum ent to be created by h er loving adm irers. A t th is tim e W FUW O also found it possible to g ra n t a sec ond aw ard. A nother w om en’s group proved its m a tu rity and effectiveness. T heir achievem ent w as a book of “Poem s of T. Shevchenko” published on th e centenary of his death. Its pub lishers w ere th e wom en-leaders of PL AST, an U krainian Y outh A ssociation. The centenary of T aras Shev chenko b ro u g h t fo rth m any types of m em orials com m em orat ing his honor. The g re a te st U k rain ian poet, and a prom inent p ain ter as well w as celebrated as a g re a t freedom fig h te r of his tim e. Beside th e m onum ent, erected before th e capitol of th e Province of M anitoba, in W inni peg, C anada m any exhibits and publications w ere arranged. This sm all volume of Shev chenko’s poetry, especially in its tri-lingual form is bound to wid en its scope of readers, endearing him to them , and m ark in g him in world lite ra tu re as am ong th e very best from th e v ast penin sula land m ass called Europe. F or on its pages th ere are, beside a biography, tran slatio n s of his poems in E nglish, F rench and G erm an, and fine reproductions of his paintings, of u tm o st in te re st to th e entire w estern world. The PLA ST women are a sm all group of th e division called “B reaking T hrough th e D am .” The volum e w as published by th e ir own effo rts. They m anaged to have so little publicity about it th a t it came as a delightful su rp rise to th e U krainian com m unity. A lthough not affiliated w ith W FUW O th ey m erited th e credit of an im p o rtan t w om en’s cultural achievem ent in 1961. These w ere th e m ost notable achievem ents done in th e p ast year. The B oard of W FUW O was happy to g ra n t them aw ards in appreciation of th e ir so valuable work. They are a proof of th e high sp irit and dedication of U krainian women, as well as of th e ir efficiency. The groups, though sm al in num ber could achieve it th ro u g h th e ir sp irit of understanding and com rade ship.
