Ukraine’s culture and the needs of its children will be em - braced in these spacious, sacred spaces. The book, recording, and concerts are part of a long journey that began in my childhood home singing with family and that traveled many miles, accompanied by many beautiful artists and dobri dushi (kind souls) along the way. One of my favorite tracks on the new album is a little-known carol from the Poltava region, “Oy dyvneye narozhdennia” (How wondrous the birth). When I was growing up, every Christmas Eve my father would begin to sing the tenor line of this an - cient carol that he’d learned when he was a young boy in western Ukraine. He would look at us long - ingly, hoping someone else would chime in. But none of us knew it: not even my mother or grand - mother. During my research, I was so happy to find the carol in its arrangement by Kyrylo Stetsenko and with that very same tenor line. Ensemble Cherubim will perform two concerts of carols this winter In Boston: January 7 at 7:30 p.m., St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, 12 Belvedere St. This concert will benefit Doctors United for Ukraine in their support of the Lviv Okhmat - dyt (maternity and children’s) hospital. It is sponsored by the Pryshlak family in memory of their parents Peter and Stephanie. Steph - anie was a long-time member of the UNWLA and served as president of its Hartford branch. In New York: January 9 at 7 p.m., the Cathe - dral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue. This concert will benefit the Olena Zelenska Foundation’s “Safe School” (Bez - pechna shkola) project.
