On Monday, August 24, members of Branch 56 joined with other members of the United Ukrainian Organizations (UUO) of Southwest Florida (whose president is Branch 56 member Vira Bodnaruk) and others who support Ukraine to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s inde - pendence. They gathered in the morning in front of North Port City Hall to raise the Ukrainian and American flags. A proclamation issued by the City of North Port, presented and read by City Commissioners Phil Stokes and David Du - val, honored Ukraine on the anniversary of its sovereign - ty and acknowledged its sacrifices over the past several years for the sake of freedom. Branch 56 members were joined by Soyuzianky from surrounding areas and other members of the UUO, in - cluding the Ukrainian American Veterans – Post 40, the Ukrainian Language Society, and St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Religious and Cultural Center. Ihor Hron, Commander of UAV – Post 40, addressed those gathered, while Daria To - mashosky, President of St. Andrew’s, served as MC. The event was televised on the evening news by the ABC Sarasota affiliate and was covered by the local newspa - per, The Daily Sun. The PBS affiliate in Southwest Florida also covered the event on its website and on its news pro - gram, In Focus , which featured an interview with Branch 56 press secretary Patricia Zalisko.
