OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LXII JULY-AUGUST 2005 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From the Desk of the President During the beautiful summer months, we have two important historical dates to celebrate—America’s Independence Day, which falls on the Fourth of July, and Ukraine’s Independence Day, which falls on August 24. This year, Ukraine will be celebrating its fourteenth year as a sovereign nation, and its Independence Day celebrations, coming in the wake of the election of Viktor Yushchenko as president, will be very special in deed. God Bless America! God Bless Ukraine! The delegates at the XXVII UNWLA Convention reelected me as president for another term. It is an honor and privilege to serve this organization and its members. I will do my best to implement all of the reso lutions and recommendations that the delegates voted upon at the convention and to continue the work begun by the founders of our organization. We were honored by the presence of several very special guests at this year's convention, including National Deputy of Ukraine and President of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, Lilia Hryhorovych, and President of World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations, Maria Shkambara. I thank these ladies for attending our convention and celebrating our 80th anniversary with us. I would also like to give special thanks to Bishop Basil Losten for celebrating the Sunday liturgy during the convention and Archbishop Antony for his invocation during the convention banquet. Stefan Schkafarovsky, a Metropolitan Opera star, entertained the audience beautifully. Some of the songs he performed evoked sentimental tears while others evoked enthusiastic laughter. We thank Mr. Schka farovsky and his talented accompanist at the piano, Christia Karpewych, for making our banquet so special.
