A WORD FROM OUR BRANCHES 25 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY UNWLA Branch 53 of the Detroit Regional Council recently celebrated its 25th anniversary by hosting a fashion show and banquet at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Warren, Michigan. The event was the latest of twenty- five memorable years during which branch members have served their community and the UNWLA with a host of events and activities. Highlights of Branch 53's activities include financial support for the UNWLA Student Scholarship Program in Brazil and a clothing drive for the children of Chomobyl, the establishment of a Ukrainian nursery school in 1975, and donations of hand-made goods and embroidery to the Ukrainian Museum of New York. Branch members have also organized programs designed to acquaint non-Ukrainians with Ukrainian history and with Ukraine's rich cultural heritage. To this end, they have sponsored annual Easter Bazaars at Warren's Universal Mall for more than twenty years, displayed Ukrainian arts and crafts at the Old World Market of the International Institute and held demonstrations on creating Ukrainian Pysanky. Branch members have also been responsbile for "Ukrainian Week" commemorations at area public schools. — Submitted by Branch 53 Press Secretaiy Sophia Sawka. IN MEMORY OF LINDA MISKOW HARRISON In sadness we bid farewell to our loyal and loving friend, Linda Harrison, who died on March 30, 1999, after a long struggle with breast cancer. Bom in Ohio, Linda moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she joined UNWLA Branch 14 in 1976. Throughout the years, she always supported the UNWLA. Her kindness and upbeat attitude and conta gious smile will be missed. She is survived by four wonderful children - Stephanie, Jimmy, Jason and Jill. Rest in God's peace, our dear friend. Linda Miskow Harrison We appreciate hearing from UNWLA Branches and are pleased to share their news with our readers. Please write to us about special anniversaries, activites and events.
