Prudentopolis, Parana, Brazil. Girls from Colegio Sta. Olga. In 1989, our program was expanded to include underprivileged Ukrainian children in Romania. Ukrai nians living in Romania are now rebuilding their lives after many years of communist terror. Most Ukrainians live in poverty in remote villages in the mountainous regions of Romania. Our meager scholarship aid ($25- $50 a year per child) helps families to survive. In the last few years, it has become quite evident that Ukrainians in Romania are experiencing the rebirth of Ukrainian culture and religion. Children are learning the Ukrainian language and they communicate with their sponsors and with us in Ukrainian. Our support in Romania is not only financial but also moral for it affords them an opportunity to come into contact with other Ukrainians in the Diaspora. In Ukraine our program is growing slowly but stead ily. Most of our scholarship recipients from Ukraine study outside of Ukraine, in Croatia, Germany, Italy and Poland. Students from Ukraine are extremely talented and very successful in their school work. More often than not they are in the top 10% of their classes. Many of them are fortunate enough to be accepted into Stu dent Exchange Programs by numerous US organiza tions. Some students have already returned to Ukraine to work within their communities. We have many more applicants from Ukraine than sponsors. The following are recent statistics on our scholar ship program. In 1993, the UNWLA INC. Scholarship Program awarded the following stipends: 30 to Argen tina, 2 to Austria, 360 to Brazil, 15 to Croatia, 2 to Eng land, 3 to Germany, 47 to Italy, 2 to Paraguay, 43 to Poland, 127 to Romania, 15 to Ukraine, 11 to USA and 1 to Yugoslavia — the total number of scholarships was 658 and total aid amounted to $167,104.41 Of the total stipends, 50 were for students from Ukraine studying either in Ukraine or in other countries, such as Austria, Croatia, Germany, Italy, and the USA. That year 57 stu dents graduated and are working in their chosen careers and professions. We are very proud of our graduates and wish them success in all their endeavors. We are very grateful for donations for administra tion — our administrative and office expenses are under 4%. All UNWLA committee members are volunteers working without compensation and the program charges no overhead fees to the donations. Each dollar donated goes towards a child’s education. Each sponsor is noti fied about the stipend sent and each stipendiant knows about his/her benefactor. So far in 1994, 403 stipends were granted mostly to students in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay where the school year started in February and March. The acade mic year in Europe began in September and October and we are in the process of sending stipends to Poland, Croatia, Italy, Ukraine and others. We are in receipt of required documents and new applications at this time. We applaud and thank all of our caring and gener ous sponsors and benefactors who have made this pro- 18 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 1994 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
