Left to right: Prof. Maria Bajko; new scholarship recipient, Tatiana Kostjuchenko of Dnipropetrovsk; Irena Kravchuk, VP Sojuz Ukrainok in Ukraine; and Anna Krawczuk, UNWLA President. Education plays a vital role in the development of a human being. To be given an opportunity to obtain an education is a great privilege that many individuals in the world community do not have. Only in America do we feel that it is an entitlement or right. Recognizing this premise, UNWLA established a Scholarship Program — Student Sponsorship Program in 1967. Its purpose was to financially assist needy and orphaned students in South America and Europe. The UNWLA Scholarship Progam enabled thousands of orphans, abandoned children, and children from large families to continue their schooling. No longer were they doomed to a fate that was dictated to them by their financial standing or social position. Through the generosity of UNWLA sponsors, one by one young men became Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox priests, both boys and girls eventually became doctors, dentists, engineers, and lawyers. Some young women became nuns and cathecists and many became teachers, secretaries, and bookkeepers which qualified them for better paying jobs. From humble beginnings, the program became one of the largest and most successful student sponsorship programs within the Ukrainian community in the US. Now 27 years later, thanks to the financial support of our many sponsors and benefactors (not just from the USA but also from Canada and Australia), our program has been expanded to include students not only from Brazil, Argentina, and Poland but also from Croatia, Yugoslavia, Romania, and Ukraine. Because of the concern, caring and financial sup port of our sponsors, thousands of young men and women were able to complete their studies and become productive members of their own communities. What a small price to pay for the huge dividends Ukrainian communities are now reaping! Former UNWLA scho larship recipients, educated as priests and nuns, are currently serving their communities in their respective parishes in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Poland, Croatia. Some have assignments here in the USA^ others are in Ukraine educating the next generation of clergy. In Brazil, Rev. Pe. Jeremias Ferens was a scholar ship recipient of the UNWLA Scholarship Program for 12 years. On September 19, 1993 he was elevated to Bishop of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. He was sponsored first by Dr. Stephan Stecura (Br 33), then by Mr. & Mrs. Mykola & Valentyna Krawec (Br. 43) and Ms. Sonia Mielnik (Br. 121). Our first university graduate in Brazil, Olga Korcza- gin, (sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Jaroslaw & Daria Howyt- kowycz of Ohio and Mr. & Mrs. Mykola & Mae Bojczuk of NJ) is presently the Director of the Institute of Cate- 16 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 1994 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
