President Bill Clinton with UNWLA President Anna Krawczuk Secretary of State Warren Christopher and Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Anatoliy Zlenko. A joint press conference followed where both pres idents emphasized the importance of the agreements. President Clinton promised President Kravchuk that the United States would increase economic aid to 700 mil lion US dollars through 1995, indicating that Ukraine is on a course to accept the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. ’’This represents a major increased commitment to an important friend in the region”, said Mr. Clinton in announcing the increase "in technical assistance and food credits. “We are convinced that we found the right friend at the right time in the United States of America. Today, Ukraine is a friend in need, but it is a friend indeed, as your saying goes”, declared Ukraine’s Presi dent Leonid Kravchuk. This joint press conference was significant for “Our Life” also. It was the first time that UNWLA’s official magazine’s representative was invited by the White House to the press conference to witness this event. That evening a dinner was given in honor of His Excellency Leonid M. Kravchuk, President of Ukraine, by Vice-President and Mrs. Albert Gore. It was a great honor for me and my husband Bernard to be among the guests. At the receiving line, Vice-President Gore (with a bit of humor) introduced me to the President of Ukraine: "President Kravchuk — please meet president Krawczuk”. At the dinner, Vice-President Gore and President Kravchuk gave speeches indicating the impor tance of the historical day, March 4, 1994, which streng thened U.S.-Ukraine relations in friendship and partner ship between the two countries.
