styles. She studied with him several times a week; “he was an entertainer, an incredible story teller, bug collec tor, scientist and chemist,” says Ms. Saj. Ms. Saj has three studios where she works — in Bloomfield, New Jersey, at her home in New Jersey and at Montclair College. Her exihibits prior to the Norbert Considine Gallery, were in such cities as Toronto, Can ada; New York City; Wayne, New Jersey; Annandale, New York and Washington, D.C. General support for Ms. Saj’s art has been wonderful and she hopes to con tinue painting, as soon as she recovers from the last exhibit for which she produced about 50 pieces since last August. Ms. Saj’s intentions are not to create controversy in her painting, but to bring two very different mediums together; traditional Byzantine cannons and abstract expressionism. She says: “ I want to create pictures that reflect the time I live in.” For more information on Ms. Saj’s work, please call (201) 338-5039. A house without flowers is not a house a heart without love is not a heart beloved like a yellow sunflower bloom in my life Iryna Senyk Upon the stage of a fat tree stump a tiny woodland elf sits ‘neath a fly agaric’s cap and guards our house. Its roof is thatched with sun-kissed sheaves of straw, windows stretched over with white fern, the bed inside is of blue moss. And fables for those in love have the run of the house... Iryna Stasiv-Kalynets How rare it is that the victoria-regia blooms in the gardens. May Lviv’s magical elegy Appear to you at least in dreams. May candles of familiar chestnut trees Light up again the temple of remembrances, While thoughts, like red blossoms, Unceasingly flower your days. Iryna Senyk Poetry from “Invincible Spirit,” Translated by Bohdan Yasen. Smoloskyp Publishing, 1977. THE KOVALIV AWARDS The UNWLA has for some years been continuing the literary research fund of Lesia and Petro Kovaliv, husband and wife, who lived in Switzerland and believed in the further study of the Ukrainian culture. They entrusted the UNWLA with continuing the fund after their deaths, and the Kovaliv Award has been given to a number of researchers/writers. This award is now being offered for a research dissertation (in English or Ukrain ian) on some branch of Ukrainian culture, history or its peoples. It must also present a new analysis of the growth of Ukraine as an independent nation. Send your entries to the UNWLA Headquarters. Winners will be notified at the Meeting of the Association of researchers of Ukraine, which will be held simultaneously with the convention of the American Association of Slavic Stu dies in November, in Philadelphia.
