Breanne Smith April, 1991 In the sunlight, I can see A place where no one can succeed In the peaceful evening I feel nature’s destruction at my heels In the sunset Footsteps of fear call upon me An echo of silence filled with disease A shade of confusion cries out to me The biggest destruction that man has seen. If the world could only fix it The biggest mix up that man has ever denied The whole world’s tragedy that makes us sigh. The Chornobyl Tragedy — Alex Tagle April, 1991 The one side of the earth is empty The sunlight not shining through The windows of the houses. It is evening and There is silence. Illustrations by Adriana Farmica BRANCH NEWS: UNWLA BRANCH 115 NATALIE NAZARK-STEFAN The members of UNWLA Branch 115 (named after the poet Lina Kostenko), have been busy with many ongoing projects since our chapter was founded three years ago. We have sponsored a booth with a local pysanky artist at several large community art fairs each year. Through these exhibits we aim to share our herit age and artistry with our non-Ukrainian neighbors, and to raise funds for other philanthropic activities. We have donated and packaged five shipments of new medications and medical supplies to clinics and hospitals in Ukraine, through the Medical Clinic on Wheels Foundation based in Wisconsin. These drugs were donated with the help of our members who are medical professionals and were valued at over $20,000. We sponsor a young Ukrainian student in Prudentopo- lis, Brazil with the UNWLA Scholarship Fund and write her individual letters, as well as send packages. We cur rently have ten active members living in the Detroit (Warren), Ann Arbor areas and hope to continue ex panding our group and activities in the upcoming months.
