In 1979 Krasiwskyj became a member of the Hel sinki Monitoring Group. In March 1979 he was arrested and although no formal charges were brought against him, he was accused of simulating mental illness. His prior conviction dating back to 1967 was reinstated: eight months in labor camp and five years in exile. In December 1980 Krasiwskyj was released from labor camp and exiled to Siberia. In the labor camp, while unable to write himself because of letter-writing restric tions, his wife Olena continued the correspondence with Iris Akahoushi. 5/1/80 Our Dear Iris! I received a short letter from Zenyo on the 25th, written on the second day of his being at the new place. He is to be there until Nov. 19 — to finish his debt for 1967, and after that five years somewhere in Altay, or Buryat or God knows where. We had hoped that someday Fate would smile upon us. But right now everything is black ...... Olena 6/5/80 Dear Iris: I have returned from Zenyo. I did not get per mission to see him — the visiting room was under repairs ...... Olena When the labor camp sentence was finished, Kra siwskyj moved to his Siberian exile and resumed his correspondence with Iris. 12/19/80 My dearest Iris: I greet you from a new place. The continuation of my story has a somewhat changed character, material lack, Siberian weather and a completely gray, cold, sunless sky. I would definitely be sad but on the tenth day Olena came and its as if she brought with her nectar and ambrosia. Zenyo 2/2/81 Dear Iris: You asked me to write about this region. It's bare, the surface is extremely muddy and bare. The main arteries — rivers Irtysh and Ob with their tributaries. But only in the summer. In winter they are frozen. The only savior — helicopters and planes ........ My village is not a forsaken corner, where besides dogs you will see nothing. Quite the opposite — dogs, well-bred and well-fed — com pete in not working with alcoholics. There are many horses, too. And some people have private cars — but you can’t go far, neither in summer nor in winter — for the entire settlement can be walked across (horizontally andvertically)in 10 minutes. Zenyo Krasiwskyj’s wife Olena, a physician by profession, joined him in exile. She was accused by the authorities of misappropriating money from a fund established by Alexander Solzhenitsyn to aid families of Soviet political prisoners. She was not arrested, possibly because she joined her husband in Siberia. 3/25/83 Dear Iris: Since January 13th I have been here at Zen- yo’s. I work at the hospital temporarily ......... When I look back I shudder, and I am overwhelmed by the deep, black threats of my ordeal, and looking ahead, I am overcome by fear and uncertainty of the future. Zenyo is an unusual, chiseled individual. He himself is never a problem to others; his strength and his self-sacrifice are so great, I am fascinated On February 2nd, 1986 Olena Antoniw died in a tragic accident, her death witnessed by her husband. It was a loss which took away the last ray of sunshine from the life of Zenovyj Krasiwskyj and left him in per petual gray ness. In July of this year Iris Akahoshi died in New York due to an illness. The last letter from Zenovij Krasiwskyj did not find her among the living. It stands as a lasting tribute to a friend. Dearest Iris: To tell you the truth, for me you were never of this earth but from the heights of heaven; you were that star in which all humanitarian qualities of mankind were concentrated and to which my heart was always sympathetic ...... you could always find the words which enlivened my spirit and strengthened my faith ..... Zenyo НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 1987 27
