How crystalline turquoise the sky above, Prismatic highlights and high collonades, Mirroring her as in life, myriad times, In pale azure waters.... Lukaszewycz-Polon 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH BY STARVATION OF 7 MILLION UKRAINIANS W ould that I m ight go forth into the open field, A nd falling on earth’s bosom grey and sere, Pour o u t m y loud lam ent until the stars should mark, A nd people quake to see me weeping there! Lesya Ukrainka (translated by Percival Cundy) In the fertile fields of Ukraine, people were dying a slow horrible death of starvation. This year we are com memorating them. On yellowing pages of newspapers of those days, as well as in books of memoirs, we see descriptions of Dante-like scenes. In this issue, we are reprinting passages of the recollections of Lucy Robins Lang of Cont: SURVEY away from Ukrainian communities; panels consisting of young panelists for young participants only; the single professional; how to bring people of Ukrainian descent back to their roots. “The survey results should provide valuable guidelines to those who in the future will plan events geared toward Ukrainian women,” concludes Nadia Nynka. “They are also interesting to the women who at tended “Ukrainian Woman in Two Worlds” as well as to the Organizing Committee,” she adds. (A.H.S.) her trip to the Soviet Union at the time of the great famine. It is difficult to read such passages and even harder to look at scenes captured in photographs. But we must never forget this holocaust and we must inform the unknowing world of it. It is the obligation of each and every one of us and of each unit of Ukrainian organizations to proclaim the truth about the great famine of 1933. In the next issue of “Our Life” we will talk of the actions taken by Ukrainian organizations, including women’s organization, in 1933. These actions included depositions, demonstrations, petitions etc. We will also talk of attempts made to help the starving masses and reprint further recollections of eyewitnesses. SOVIET NIGHTMARE We went to the Soviet Intourist Bureau in Berlin, and pre sented the letter of recommendation that Senator Borah had given us. Borah was then the leading advocate of recognition of the Soviet Union, and Moscow authorities, when the letter was read to them over the telephone, immediately gave their approval. Intourist Bureau must have found us worthwhile customers, for we paid for all the available tourist trips in Russia, stipulating in our contract that we could change from one trip to another as we saw fit. We took this precaution be cause Harry was described on his passport as a journalist, and the movements of newspaper men were watched with partic ular care.
