UNWLA BRANCH 61 On Saturday, December 11, 1982, from 10 AM to 4 PM, more than 2000 adults and children attended the 5th annual International Festival Day at the Morris Museum of Arts and Sciences, located in Morristown, New Jersey. The Museum invited eleven ethnic groups to display their ethnic crafts, exotic and delicious delicacies, and folk dancing and singing in the Museum theater. The Ukrainian group was represented by Soyuz Ukrainok Branch 61 of Whippany, N.J. In an upper level Museum room decorated with food-laden tables, a Hutzul liznyk and wheat didukh, Soyuzanky Luba Batka, Nusia Paszczak Denysyk, Zina Ferenc, Hania Kosonocky, Irka Labinska, Slavka Mulyk, Katerina Rockerfeller, Lida Taranko, Luba Walchuk and Danusia Yaworska, in beautifully embroidered Ukrainian blouses, sold mouth-watering varenycky, both hot and pre packaged to take home. An extensive and delicious variety of Ukrainian baked goods sold briskly. Also, Soyuz Ukrainok Christmas decoration how-to books were sold, and “Nusia Artwear” was on display for the crafts presentation. In the Museum lobby was a spectacular 10-foot Christmas tree of all nations, decorated with international ornaments and flags given to the Museum by the various participating ethnic groups. At this central and busy location, the Ukrainian St. Nicholas (Bohdan Ferenc) and his angels (Natalie Kosonocky and Oksana Mulyk) greeted and gifted Museum visitors with candy and ribboned scrolls describing our St. Nicholas tradition. In front of us we see a letter from a mother in Poland, writing to us about an unfortunate accident, the victim of which was her 2Уг year old son Rostyk. As a result of the accident, Rostyk’s left hand has been crippled: the palm is im mobilized, two fingers are missing. With the letter, we received photographs and X-rays of the injured hand. To correct the handicap, plastic surgery is neces sary; however, the surgery cannot be done in Poland. The photographs and X-rays of the injured hand have been examined by Ukrainian doctors in the U.S., as well as by orthopedic specialists, all of whom agree that the operation is not only pos sible in the U.S., but necessary as well if Rostyk is to regain the use of his left hand. Thus the Social Service Committee is turning to you to come to Rostyk’s as sistance. Please send your contribution to UNWLA, 108 Second Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10003. Make out your check to the UNWLA Social Service Com mittee, for the aid of “Rostyk”. Sonyia Woloshyn, the museum's adm inistrative secretary, is greeted by Natalie Kosonocky, who is dressed as an angel. Photo credit: Cary Herz/Star Ledger.
