НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Травень 2026 19 ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ВІДДІЛІВ І ЧЛЕНКИНЬ • BRANCH & MEMBER NEWS Branch 118 Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary in Style Martha Noukas , Branch 118, Houston, TX UNWLA Branch 118 celebrated its 50th anniversary with a fabulous celebration and fundraising event on November 8, 2025, at the Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church Parish Hall in Houston, Texas. As guests arrived at the start of the evening, they were greeted with decor that glittered in gold, and with the sounds of classical music by accomplished violinist Volodymyr Kot - siouruba filling the air. Branch members Natalka Senkiv, Solo - miia Winchester, and Ksenia Kychka welcomed and pinned guests with special Branch 118 50th Anniversary buttons, and then guided guests to the appetizer table and the bar, where they could enjoy complimentary refreshments, including very special sparkling wines from Ukraine. Lining one side of the banquet hall were numerous tables filled with Branch 118 archival material, which included pos - terboards with newspaper clippings and advertisements that had been placed in numerous newspapers across the Hou - ston area for publicity purposes over the past 50 years. Sev - eral branch photo albums compiled by past presidents were on display for everyone to enjoy. Posters and flyers that had been created for each Ukrainian Easter Bazaar, Autumn Mas- querade, and Christmas Craft and Bake Sale were on display, as were the numerous certificates and awards that the branch has received over the years from UNWLA headquarters, elect - ed officials, and persons of distinction. The display was organ- ized by Martha Noukas, who as a Branch 118 member for 50 years had quietly served as archivist, keeping track of valuable documentation. Just beyond the archive table, guests were met with a long silent auction table, loaded with unique auction items, includ - ing tickets to a Texans football game; tickets to fancy Houston eateries; nice bottles of Art Wine; and Ukrainian embroidery and ceramics. Donations to the silent auction came from numerous members of the branch and via the hard work of branch president Juliana Villacorta. Talented branch member Elisa Jackson coordinated items and made sure the display was eye-catching and appealing. As guests continued toward the stage area, they found a table where two books were for sale that evening. The first was the Branch 118 Quilt book, documenting the work of Branch 118 members who took part in the creation of the first "Ukrainian-American Quilt" in the year 2000. The book reveals how the process began and the reflections of each participat - ing member who helped to cross-stitch the fabulous work of art. The quilt project was initiated by Martha Noukas, as was the compiling of the quilt book. Martha Noukas was presented with a bou - quet of sunflowers in recognition of her 50 years of service to Branch 118. Lesia Ihnat, visiting from Lviv, Ukraine (and cousin to Martha Noukas), helped tremen - dously with the celebration preparations and display. Natalka Senkiv greeted David Nishtick and pinned him with a 50th Anniversary button.
