“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2009 29 Visit and Explore Our New UNWLA Website In her acceptance speech d uring the XXVIII Ukrainian Nati onal Women’s League of America National Convention, newly elected President Marianna Zajac outlined her vision and direction for the organization , which included an expanded and grander w ebsite. As the president state d , “ . . . w e must align our future work to reflect the changes that are dictated by the 21st century”. Using technologies that were not available when the original w ebsite was constructed, the new w ebsite, with its new look and feel, enables continued communication within the UNWLA and the pres entation of information about the organization to the public. We intend to capitalize on this w ebsite as a showcase for introducing o ur organization to all interested and potential members. T he UNWLA launched the new w ebsite at www.unwla.org on March 9, 2 009. The first phase of the New UNWLA w ebsite Project was to construct an English version of the site. The second phase , planned for later this year, will include construction of a Ukrainian version . Th e UNWLA Website Design Committee (WDC) was formed at t he October 26, 2008 meeting of the UNWLA National Board and was charged with creating a new version of the existing UNWLA w ebsite. The WDC members understood that in order to work together effectively , and thus deliver and i ntroduce a new w ebsite within th e promised time, we would have to use Internet videoconferencing technology. We decided on a service called WebEx. WebEx enabled us to meet online every week, and we were able to speak to each other in an audio conference and, most importantly, to share an d view documents and w ebsite screens. This technology allowed us to review the ongoing and evolving design of the proposed new UNWLA w ebsite. The process was very successful for Phase I of the New UNWLA Website Project implementation, and, as a result, we are planning to continue to use WebEx during Phase II of the project. As mentioned above, Phase II of the New UNWLA w ebsite Project incorporates the construction and development of a Ukrainian version of the new UNWLA w ebsite, as well as ensuring ongoing maintenance and support. The team members for Phase II are Sophia Hewryk, Vera Kushnir, Ulana Zinych , and Zoriana Haftkowycz , with pro bono technical support to be provided by Lazlo Szijj. In the future, the WDC is planning to incorporate a new w ebsite tec hnology (Drupal) that will provide more flexibility and customization in design, the ability to register and maintain individual user accounts, provide an online calendar, support online discussion/forum groups, etc. As you browse through the new UNWLA w eb site, you will notice that most of the static content is the same as content featured in the previous version of the website, which was designed and maintained by Hanya Krill. Her efforts made our job much easier and quicker. Going through the process of d esigning a website, the WDC better understands how much time Hanya devoted to the previous website. We t hank you, Han y u , and your design group, for the work you did for the UNWLA. I would like to thank Marta Danyluk for providing me with archival informat ion about the UNWLA, which I had requested during our planning sessions. We will be using this valuable material for the Ukrainian version of the website. The new UNWLA website could not have been created without the commitment of the Phase I UNWLA Website Design Committee: Sophia Hewryk, Vera Kushnir, Anna Macielinski, Ulana Zinych, and especially our pro bono technical support expert Lazlo Szijj (husband of Maria Haftkowycz Szijj). As for myself, I can only say that our weekly meetings were not only very productive but also enjoyable. I look forward to Phase II and hope that all UNWLA members will find the website informative, useful and pertinent. We ask everyone to use the website not only for seeking inform ation about upcoming events, but also for shar ing pictures and articles about past events. Zoriana Haftkowycz Team Leader of the New UNWLA Website Project, and Webmaster (cyawebmaster@unwla.org)
